Ex-cop killed in gunfight vs. policeman

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A former member of the Manila Police District was killed after he traded shots with a policeman on New Year’s Day in Barangay Duhat, Bocaue, Bulacan.
In his report to Police Regional Office 3 director Chief Supt. Edgardo T. Ladao, Bulacan police director Senior Supt. Joel Orduna identified the fatality as Rommel Fortuno, 40, of Roxabago, Tondo, Manila.
The suspect identified as PO2 Vergilio Manuzon, 30, married, a member of Bulacan PNP-Provincial Public Safety Company and presently residing at No. 30 Gil Buena Street, Bocaue, immediately surrendered to authorities and is now under the custody of the Bocaue police.
Prior to the shooting, the victim figured in a heated argument with his former girlfriend identified as Cindy Laguardia, 21. The incident took place at the compound of Laguardia’s residence in Barangay Duhat at around 10:30 a.m.
While confronting his former girlfriend, the victim pulled out his cal. 45 pistol and poked it at Laguardia and her boyfriend identified as Alvin Bautista, 25 of Barangay Nagbalon, Marilao, Bulacan.
Police said the victim also pointed his gun to everyone at the compound including two young boys who were identified as the siblings of Manuzon.
Upon learning of the incident, Manuzon rushed to the scene and tried to pacify Fortuno by introducing himself as a police officer.
But the victim ignored Manuzon and instead boarded his black-red Yamaha Mio Sporty motorcycle without a plate number. But before leaving the place, the victim shot the responding policeman.
Manuzon retaliated, hitting the victim in the different parts of his body. Though wounded, Fortuno tried to escape aboard his motorcycle while shooting at Manuzon until he rammed a fence and fell.
Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) team from the Bulacan Provincial Crime Laboratory Office recovered three spent shells of a caliber .45; two spent shells of 9mm; a metal jacket of undetermined fired bullets; caliber .45 pistol marked Armscor; two magazine assembly; a Mio Sporty motorcycle without plate number; personal belongings of the victim, including PNP ID, driver’s license, wallet and cellular phone.
Manuzon surrendered to Bocaue police together with his issued 9mm Pietro Berreta.
Police brought the remains of the victim to Flavel Funeral Parlor in Bocaue for autopsy.
Record showed that Fortuno was declared AWOL after he killed SPO1 Rodrigo Cortez of the Highway Patrol Group-NCR last February and pedicab driver Kim Tanyog of Bgy. Tayuman in Tondo, Manila. ●Rudy Abular
