Wine and cheese has always been considered a marriage made in heaven but in reality, pairing the right wine with each cheese is anything but obvious.

Wrong pairing has led to unfortunate conclusions that either the wine was no good or the cheese was bad or both. In many such cases wine lovers instinctively select a red wine when treating themselves to a variety of cheese. Actually white wines tend to go well with more kinds of cheese than red wines.

For this wine and cheese tasting, six flights of cheese from France and USA will be served in regular intervals given participants ample time to rest their palates in between servings and also to savor different wines in an unhurried pace.

A good selection of vintage wines from the famous cellars of Yats will be offered for your enjoyment. Participants are encouraged to experiment with different pairings for each type of cheese, often departing from our well established paradigms. This is a rare opportunity for participants to explore different synergies from different pairings.

UNA makes presence felt in provinces

CANDABA, Pampanga, Philippines—The United Nationalist Alliance has begun making its presence felt in the provinces, beginning with Pampanga, where President Beniogno Aquino won in the 2010 elections.
Vice President Jejomar Binay and several prospective candidates in the UNA senatorial slate came here on Saturday for the launch of a local political party.
But Binay said he attended the launch of Anac ning Candaba (ANC) because its founder, Mayor Jerry Pelayo, a staunch ally of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, is his “personal friend.”
He said the visit should not be seen as a form of early campaigning.
“We have not yet declared [UNA with the Commission on Elections],” Binay told the Inquirer.
He was welcomed here by Governor Lilia Pineda, Vice Governor Joseller Guiao and at least 10 Pampanga mayors.
Zambales Representative Milagros Magsaysay, another Arroyo ally, arrived ahead of Binay and confirmed she was running for senator under UNA.
Arroyo, who represents the second district of Pampanga in the House of Representatives, is detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for an election sabotage case.
Former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, another prospective candidate on UNA’s senatorial ticket, joined Binay and Magsaysay later.
Gabriel Claudio, a former political adviser of Arroyo, came to the occasion but was not seen talking with Binay.
Pelayo said ANC, as a local political party, is bringing a “politics of hope” to the town known for its bird conservation and agricultural production. His 30-year-old son, Patrick, is leading the ANC youth bloc.
In the launch, Binay hailed the formation of ANC, saying local political parties are good for pushing the agenda of communities.
Local officials speaking in the launch promised to support Binay’s bid to become the country’s next president in 2016.

UNA is a coalition of Binay’s Partido Demokratikong Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) of former President Joseph Estrada.
In a meeting of top UNA leaders last week, Estrada said Binay pointed to the combined strength of their endorsement power for the 2013 midterm elections, as shown by the results of a recent Pulse Asia survey.
The survey showed that 73 percent of respondents said they would vote for candidates endorsed by Binay, while 51 percent said they would vote for candidates backed by Estrada.
“If we combine 73 and 51 (that) is 124. So our bets are really at an advantage,” Estrada said.
President Aquino ranked second in the survey with 66 percent of respondents saying they would vote for candidates he would endorse.

Pirated DVDs seized in Angeles City

ANGELES CITY — Joint elements of the Optical Media Board (OMB) and the local police confiscated at least 20 sacks of pirated DVDs from street stalls along Fields Avenue here and in Dau in nearby Mabalacat town.
OMB chairman Ronnie Ricketts personally supervised the surprise raid on sidewalk merchants selling fake DVDs.
Chief Inspector Luisito M. Tan, Police Station 4 chief, said Ricketts coordinated with the city police and Mabalacat police before conducting the operation around 5 p.m. Friday.

Pampanga town stages early ‘senakulo’

PAMPANGA, Philippines – Residents in the town of Porac staged a reenactment of Jesus Christ’s passion and death or “senakulo” as early as Wednesday to meditate more deeply on Christ’s sacrifice.
There were some cast as Jews who jeered as Jesus and the two robbers passed carrying their crosses.
In Barangay Manibaug, the procession stopped and the crucifixion began.
“Para mamulat sa isipin nila kung ano ang dinanas ni Kristo nang pahirapan siya, para maliwanagan ang iba,” said the event’s organizer Remigio Sison.
Staging a “senakulo” has been a tradition in Pampanga, allowing adults and children to see what Christ’s sacrifice was like.
On Good Friday, there will be more crucifixions in Cutud in San Fernando, Pampanga where around 20 devotees will participate.
Barricades are now being positioned on the hill where the crucifixions will take place.
Other towns like San Juan, Sta. Lucia and Angeles City will also hold their own traditions and have implemented traffic re-routing schemes.

Pampanga heads towards ‘rabies free Philippines’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -– An official from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) earlier stressed that the province of Pampanga is already heading towards reducing and ultimately eradicating rabies cases by 2020.
Provincial Veterinarian Augusto Baluyut Jr., claimed that Pampanga is no longer included in the Top 10 provinces with high animal rabies cases nationwide.
“We are longer in the top three in the region (Central Luzon) with high animal rabies cases,” Baluyut disclosed in his report to Governor Lilia Pineda.
It can be recalled that as per record for 2010, the Regional Rabies Center of the Department of Agriculture bared that the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan were included among the top ten provinces with high animal rabies cases nationwide.
Baluyut said there are no reported animal positive cases for the last six months.
The province has a dog population of more than 138,227. Most of which come from the City of San Fernando with 18,856 dogs, Mabalacat, 14,231, Lubao 10,014, Mexico, 9,891 and Apalit with 9,730 dogs.
As of March 16, the PVO office caused the vaccination of at least 22,877 animals including 22,199 dogs, 677 cats, one monkey.
They also served not less than 13,868 pet owners in the province covering 146 barangays.
The Provincial Government likewise through Governor Lilia Pineda also established Animal Bite Treatment Centers in some selected district hospitals in Pampanga.

CEBU CITY — The Quota International of Pampanga and Angeles City won in the 18th District Conference of Quota International District 41 held at the Marco Polo Hotel in this city over the weekend.
The two clubs bested eight other Quota clubs from different parts of the country.
The district conference is an annual event where Quota clubs from all over the country share best practices in socio-civic service to the poor and less fortunate women and children in the community.
Quota International of Pampanga won first place and Quota International of Angeles City won third place in the dance presentation.
Quota International of Pampanga president Jennifer Lopez and Quota International of Angeles City president Emy Narciso said the two Quota clubs were able to highlight Pampanga’s cultural identity and heritage in their recent performance in the district conference.
The district conference features talks on women’s rights, local initiatives of government support for women and children and other pertinent issues on gender, women empowerment and protection of the rights of children.
Last year, under the leadership of past president Myra Manabat, Quota International of Pampanga won the best presentation in the same conference held in Davao City.
Lopez said they are also continuing their assistance to the Special Education Class of Pampanga High School where the organization has donated a school building and appropriate funding and programs for the students.

Pagcor Remits P3.5-B To Treasury

State-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) turned P3.54 billion to the treasury bureau as part of its share in the gaming agency’s earning in the first-three months of the year, surpassing its P2.54-billion remittance in the same period last year.

Data from the Bureau of Treasury showed that Pagcor’s remittance in January to March of the year was more than 39 percent, or P1 billion higher compared with the end-March contribution to state coffers from a year ago.

As a government-owned and controlled corporation, Pagcor is required by Republic Act 7656 or the Dividend Law to remit at least 50 percent of its annual gross earnings to the government.

In March alone, total Pagcor contributions amounted to P1.22 billion, higher by 44 percent compared with P847 million in the same month last year.

Currently, Pagcor operates 13 agency-run Casino Filipino facilities and has four licensed casinos – Fontana Casino in Pampanga, East Bay Casino in Rizal, Poro Point Casino in La Union and Fort Stotsenberg also in Pampanga.

In 2011, Pagcor remitted P11.437 billion to the government, higher by 4.5 percent compared with the Department of Finance’s (DOF) expected P10.94 billion contribution. Last year’s contribution to state coffers by Pagcor was also higher by 10.5 percent compared with 10.343 billion that the agency remitted in the previous year.

Cristino Naguiat Jr., Pagcor chairman and chief executive earlier said that Pagcor is aiming to grow its revenues by 25 percent this year to P45 billion from P36 billion in 2011 as it continues to package gaming and tourism to overseas travelers.

Naguiat said the higher revenues will also come on the back of the renegotiation of contracts with licensees and service providers that have re¬sulted in a bigger share of revenues for Pagcor. In March, Pagcor said it exceeded its gross income target due to strong performance of other gaming establishments it regulates, enabling them to increase the company’s remittances to its mandated beneficiaries.

Pag-IBIG Reminds Of Condonation Program

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF, or Pag-IBIG Fund, here disclosed that the government office is still offering a penalty condonation program until June 30 for members who have unpaid housing loans and delinquent employers who failed to register their employees with the agency.
The agency has launched a penalty condonation program for members who have failed to make housing loan repayments for at least three months.
HDMF said the housing loan penalty condonation program aims to extend assistance to its members, especially those who were affected by typhoons and earthquakes and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who experienced financial woes in the Middle East and Japan, said PAG-IBIG Fund spokesperson James Cosico in a statement.
The penalty condonation program is also available for delinquent employers, or those that failed to register their employees with the agency and collect contributions from them for payment to the PagIBIG Fund, he said.
Cosico clarified that employers who deducted PagIBIG payments from workers but did not remit this are not covered by the condonation program. Employees who have previously availed themselves of the condonation program for unpaid loans are not qualified to apply.
HDMF said that eligible employers may pay contribution in behalf of their employees from the time that the latter should have been covered by the PAG-IBIG Fund.
Universal PAG-IBIG coverage was made mandatory in 2010 to assure the public of better social security services.
“The delinquent employers may pay only the employer’s contribution, as the employees may no longer be connected with the company. Employees, on the other hand, may opt to pay the fraction that they ought to contribute during the past years,” it said.
Consico also said that PAG-IBIG fund has offices in the regions and provinces all over the country that members can visit so that they can be assisted in drawing up a plan for repayment of their obligations.
Likewise, those negligent employees who have already availed themselves of the PAG-IBIG benefits and loan services but have had bad records would be ineligible for the program.

P3-B infra for Pampanga approved

THE Regional Development Council (RDC) recently approved the implementation of P3.056 billion worth of infrastructure projects in Pampanga.
Under the Convergence Program for Enhancing Tourism Access of the Departments of Tourism (DOT) and Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the RDC approved the infrastructure projects, which include the P277-million widening of the West Circumferential Road in Angeles City; P185-million widening of Clark-Angeles-Magalang road in Angeles City; P694-million road widening leading to the Clark International Airport Route 1 in the cities of Angeles and San Fernando; P327-million road widening leading to CIA Route 2 in Angeles City; P600-million road leading to CIA Route 3 in Angeles City; P600-million East Circumferential Road in Angeles City; and the P373-million rehabilitation of Olongapo-San Fernando Road.
Other projects approved are the P201-million widening and concreting of Paseo del Congreso in Malolos City and the P75-million widening of the Lourdes Road-Clark Air Base in Bamban, Tarlac.
In a statement, the RDC said “Republic Act 9593, otherwise known as the Tourism Act of 2009, declares tourism as an indispensable element of the national economy and an industry of national interest and importance which must be harnessed as an engine of socio-economic growth and cultural affirmation to generate investment, foreign exchange and employment and to continue to mold an enhanced sense of national pride for all Filipinos.
As such, the law established the Tourism Infrastructure Program for identification and immediate funding of vital access roads, airports, and seaports in tourism areas across the archipelago.”
The program is being implemented by DOT and DPWH in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Communications and Department of Budget and Management.
Proposed projects must obtain the approval of the RDC in order for its inclusion in the budget of DPWH.
RDC is the highest policy-making body in Central Luzon and serves as the counterpart of the NEDA Board at the subnational level.
It is the primary institution that coordinates and sets the direction of all economic and social development efforts in the region and serves as a forum where local efforts can be related and integrated with national development activities.
Council members include all governors, city mayors, municipal mayors of capital towns, presidents of municipal mayors’ league, regional directors of national government agencies and representatives from the private sector.
