Pineda fetes farmers on Pampanga Day

LUBAO, Pampanga – At least 2,500 farmers were recognized here as the province celebrated its 441st founding anniversary on December 11 and local officials vowed to focus on farming in 2013.
Gov. Lilia Pineda said that her government will improve assistance to farmers even if she had earlier released P14 million for the marginalized farmers for their seedlings. The governor also gave various assistance to farmers and fisherfolk affected by the recent calamities.
Pineda said he had focused on health in the first two years of her office and released P170 million for the 11 provincial-run hospitals. She added that her administration had also focused on education, livelihood and maintenance of peace and order.
“I will focus on farming next year if I am still the governor,” said Pineda, earning cheers from the audience at the jam-packed Lubao Gym.
There are between 38,000 to 42,000 farmers in the province whose chief production is rice and corn, said assistant provincial agriculturist Crispin Guintu.
“The gathering is the governor’s way of giving collective recognition to farmers, especially the old ones,” said Guintu in the dialect.
A son of a farmer in Sta. Cruz, Lubao, Pineda said she has “high regards” for farmers who had successfully sent their children to school.
Narciso Dagdag, an 81-year-old farmer from San Simon town, disclosed that he has two children who are both professionals. He added that his daughter is an accountant, while her son is an aeronautics engineer.
Asked when he started farming, Dagdag said “I think I was 14 years old then.” He urged Pineda to improve the irrigation system in San Simon.
Dagdag said “poor irrigation” in their area had negatively affected their production.
Pineda said she “will look into all the problems in the irrigation system.”
Board Members Nestor Tolentino, Salvador Dimson, Olga Frances “Fritzie” David-Dizon, Trina Dizon and Ric Yabut; Guagua Councilor Tonton Torres; and, former board member Arthur Salalila assisted Pineda in the Pampanga Day celebration.
In the same event, Pineda also gave a service vehicle to Pampanga Agriculture Fisheries Council represented by its vice chairman, Nestor Garcia.
