Senator wants Azkals investigated for ‘harassment’

SENATOR Pia Cayetano called on sports officials Monday to launch an immediate investigation on a sexual harassment complaint filed by former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Cristy Ramos against members of the national football team.
She said an “immediate and independent probe” must put to rest the allegations made by Ramos against Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado of the Azkals, who settled for a 1-1 draw when they faced regional powerhouse Malaysia on February 29.
“If I were in the shoes of Cristy Ramos, I would likewise feel extremely offended like any woman would be,” Cayetano said.
According to the complaint that Ramos filed with the Asian Football Confederation in Kuala Lumpur, Moy made comments on her bra size while she was checking players’ kits and accreditation cards prior to the friendly match.
Moy allegedly “said in a loud voice ‘Must be a B cup,’ to which the players laughed loudly,” Ramos said.
Guirado, meanwhile, “stood in front of me purposely just wearing his briefs and made no attempts to wear shorts or cover his underwear,” Ramos said.
“While all this was happening, none of the Philippine team officials present nor the team captain, James Joseph Younghusband, made any attempts to discipline the players and tell them to behave properly,” she said.
“Sexual harassment must not be tolerated anytime, anywhere. Such acts should not go unpunished,” said Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on youth, women, and demographics.
Ramos thanked Cayetano for the gesture but Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia declined to comment as of Monday.
“There should be an investigation because we have laws versus sexual harassment and violence versus women and sexual harassment is a crime,” she said in a text message to Sun.Star.
Cayetano added she is bothered that none of the Azkals “made any effort to stop their (Moy and Guirado) offending acts and remarks.”
“I call for the immediate investigation of this incident so this can be put to rest, not only because this is a serious allegation…but also because the Azkals are looked up to by the youth as modern-day heroes and role models,” said the senator, a triathlete.
