Senator to Negrenses: Closely monitor Corona impeachment

SENATOR Chiz Escudero urged Negrenses to closely monitor and observe the impeachment trial against Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Escudero said the trial of Corona before the Senate, which formed itself into an impeachment court, will start on January 16.
In an interview with Mercado Publiko Program, the senator also bared that the Senate will not allow any official, even the President, to preempt the Senate’s decision in the impeachment proceedings, as he pledged to maintain his independence.
The senator made the statement after it was reported that the President is already scouting for the replacement of Corona.
“We will not allow him to preempt the Senate in this issue,” Escudero said.
He added that he will ask the Senate for the issuance of a gag order while the impeachment trial is ongoing to avoid the scenario of the nation’s leaders washing their dirty linen in public.
“We are being monitored by the international community on the impeachment,” Escudero said.
“We will not also allow any walk out, foul language and any uncalled for acts, like dancing, during the impeachment trial. We will make the impeachment court as a venue for the concerned officials to say what they mean to say,” Escudero added.
Escudero was referring to former Senator Tessie Oreta who was dubbed the “Dancing Queen” when she danced in glee after majority of the senators blocked the opening of the controversial envelope during the impeachment trial against former President Erap Estrada.
