Mother’s Day Every Day

Every year Mother’s Day is anticipated by many as a chance to show their love and thanks to their wives and mothers for all they do. Fathers and children look forward to it and rush to the nearest mall to get the latest Mother’s Day gift or card.

It is mothers, not fathers, who carry the greatest burden in life and are much more in tune to what real life is all about. A mother thinks day and night about the well-being of her children. She is the first to praise them and to comfort them, and the first to protect them when she senses that they may be in danger. It is she who has carried them and borne the pains of pregnancy and childbirth, and who continues to carry them in her heart. There is an old Jewish saying: “God could not be everywhere at once, so he gave each child a mother.”

If only we could grasp the tremendous importance of this mystery. Appreciating and respecting their wives and mothers is the only way for men to understand their task as husbands and fathers. There is great confusion today about the role of men and women. Many women rebel, with good reason, against the oppression and lovelessness of the men around them, but in the end their resentment, understandable as it may be, achieves little.

Man and woman have been created as equals, but God has given them different roles. My wife Verena and I have been blessed with 38 years of marriage. God gave us eight children and we now have 35 grandchildren. My wife has stood by me in bad times as well as in good times. In these 38 years we have experienced many crises, but she was always steadfastly at my side, never doubting in God’s love and confident that everything would turn out all right in the end. Without an intensive prayer life and daily forgiveness, this would not have been possible.

There’s an old saying that “when a woman delivers a child she has one foot in the grave.” This is as true now as when my mother and my wife went through childbirth. In fact, only two or three decades ago we took a normal, healthy birth for granted. Of course there were exceptions; there is never a guarantee that mother and child will survive. But now, in this day and age, there are complications of one kind or another in a great proportion of births. If only for this reason, our wives and mothers deserve far more honor and respect from us men. In fact, if we were to show this love, our own lives-and the whole world-would be turned upside down.

Let’s not miss the chance to use this Mother’s Day to show much more love to our mothers and wives. If we do this, we will actually be doing ourselves a service: We might gain a better understanding of what fatherhood and marriage is all about. It is not about standing above our wives, tyrannizing and controlling them. Rather, it is about protecting, loving and caring for them. In the end we will feel a lot better about ourselves, not to mention the transforming effect on our children when they realize that Dad and Mom truly love and care for each other and for their children.

This Mother’s Day–and every day–I will do my best to show my wife my appreciation for everything she has done for me, for my children and grandchildren, and for many others as well. Magnificent Women: A Mothers Day Tribute

But I don’t want to grow any more,” I sobbed, “I’ve grown enough and I just want a break from growing for a little while…I’m tired! I’m so tired!”
My Mom sobbed to as she held my trembling, thirteen year old body. We had just learned that although doctors had tried to salvage my vision, over three months and various surgeries, they could do no more. I would be unsighted for the remainder of my life.
“I know Honey,” my Mom said through her tears, “I would give anything to take this on for you. I’m here, I’ll be right here. I promise.”
The beautiful thing is, I knew, with every ounce of my being, that my Mom would truly have taken this on in my place. She was, and would be “there for me.” Her strength, her compassion and her utter belief in me has always emanated through her and I have gratefully sometimes hungrily absorbed every bit of it. I can honestly say, that I am who I am today, because my incredible Mom, and countless other beloved people, infused me with the knowledge that we don’t walk alone. Yes, we have to take on our own challenges, but if we stay open and reciprocate the love of others, they will gift us with the very words, the helping hand or the shoulder to cry on that we need in times when our strength alone isn’t enough.
Even in those terrible moments after I learned about my vision, I “knew” I would be alright. I knew I would be loved. I knew there would be, and I already felt it to my core, deep sorrow. I was also sure there would be a lot of work ahead and that I would have to make a new path for myself. But with my Mom’s arms around me I had an overwhelming sense of power and possibility. Even through the sorrow I knew who I was, I knew who I was surrounded by and I was so grateful that I wouldn’t have to do this alone.
As we move into a month in which we celebrate incredible women in our lives, I am struck by and reminded of the large number of women who have impacted my life. It’s almost staggering when I think of my own mom, grandmothers (I have had the blessing of knowing my great-grandma and both my maternal and paternal grandmas), teachers, mentors, friends, aunts, cousins, role models, colleagues, and clients. I could go on and on but you get the picture. Every one of these women has taught me something new about how to live, love, create, give, or receive in order to bless or be blessed. I live in gratitude to each of them. Thank you magnificent women!
Even if I’ve never had the joy of meeting you, dear reader, I live in gratitude to you! Thank you, magnificent woman, for touching the lives of so many. You can’t begin to imagine the lives you’ve blessed so don’t even try. Just know that by simply living and sharing your world with others, you change people’s lives for the better. Mother’s Day Proclamation

This powerful Proclamation was made by Julia Ward Howe in the advocacy for the need of official celebration of Mother’s Day in Boston, United States of America in 1870. Miss Howe was the first person in US to recognize the need for Mother’s Day holiday. She was successful in raising awareness amongst the masses and pushing her plead to the upper echelons of power.

Following this very potent Proclamation made in 1870, the Mothers’ Peace Day Observance was held on the second Sunday in June, 1872. Such observances began to take place each year thereafter and paved the way for Mothers’ Day Holiday in US on the second Sunday of May.

Though Ms Howe could not herself get the day recognized as the official holiday, she is revered for her significant contributions towards the celebration of the day and for bestowing honor on mothers.
