THE Angeles City Tourism Office (Acto) has revealed a preview of its branding campaign which aims to create a positive image for the city during the “Tourism Brand and Calendar Launch” held recently at the Museo ning Angeles.
The newly launched brand which is the slogan “Angeles City: I Like!” aspires to showcase what makes Angeles City unique and distinguishable from other competing destinations.
According to Christine Nunag, current head of the Acto, the first thing that they wanted to accomplish is to promote awareness and appreciation of what the city has to offer and encourage local pride.
“When we are proud of our city, it is easier to sell it as a tourism destination,” Nunag said.
Acto then presented to tourism stakeholders a sneak preview of their video on the things that one can “like” about Angeles City.
Nunag confirmed that the video is only a part of a series of audio-visual presentations that will target different market profiles in the coming months, together with print and social media promotions.
She confirmed that the city will embark on a landmark project to culturally map the city’s 33 barangays with the help of the University of Sto. Tomas Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment.
The said organization was behind the success of tourism hotspots such as Vigan, Bohol and Cebu, among others.
“The goal [of the cultural mapping] is to research and document the stories and memories of Angeles City and uncover tangible, intangible, natural and built resources,” Nunag added.
In the previous year, Acto already started the use of the brand “Angeles City: I Like!” and proposed it to Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, other city officials, representatives from the Research, Education and Institutional Development (REID) Foundation and city stakeholders.
The slogan was taken from “Angeles-City-I-Like-Angeles-City-I-Love” offered by one of the participants in the Branding Workshop held in February 2011.
Nunag also explained how “Angeles City: I Like!” is an appropriate brand name for the city.
“‘Like’ is said to be the modern equivalent of love,” shares Nunag, who was appointed City Tourism Officer in September 2011.
“Inspired by the Facebook phenomenon of 500 million users who click three billion Facebook likes a day, ‘Like’ is a way to give positive feedback,” she said.
“‘Like’ is to connect with things you care about. Most importantly, ‘I Like’ is a first aid treatment, a ‘modern’ or digital tool to counter the unlikeable image of Angeles City as seen in top pages of internet search engines,” Nunag explained.
For his part, Pamintuan lauded the efforts of Acto in coming up with a new brand and hopes that the Angeleños and Kapampangans would support it.
“Along with the Branding Campaign and the revamped tourism activities for 2012, there is finally something that tourists and Angeleños themselves can look forward to in the city,” the mayor said.
“We would like to leave a positive image for the city, and through the Acto and the support of our fellow Kapampangans, we would be able to do it,” Pamintuan added.
Recently, Pamintuan expressed his support to Congressman Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin’s proposal to erect a world-class Disneyland Theme Park at the Clark Freeport Zone.
He said the establishment of the said theme park at Clark would be beneficial to neighboring towns and cities in terms of tourism, employment and business.

ANGELES CITY — The City Council is set to conduct an investigation on alleged irregularities in the issuance of fire clearances by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here.
This stemmed from a complaint filed by Fatima Salvo, proprietor of Notes and Rhythms School of Music, before the City Council.
Salvo informed the councilors that a representative of a fire extinguisher firm visited the school and acted as if he was officially sent by the BFP.
In connection to this, agents of fire extinguisher manufacturers have been going around business establishments and name-dropping fire officers to sell their wares.
Vice Mayor Maria Vicenta Vega Cabigting said she will conduct an inquiry regarding the alleged misrepresentations being made by fire extinguisher agents.
The vice mayor thanked Salvo for airing her complaint regarding the irregularity.
Councilor Maricel Morales said she has been receiving complaints from businessmen in connection with the issue since February.
The councilor called for an en banc committee hearing and asked for the invitation of the fire extinguisher dealers.
Chief Inspector Gary Alto, city fire marshall, denied that his office sends agents to business establishments to sell fire extinguishers.
Salvo and Alto appeared during the last council session and had a faceoff. But Alto claimed that businessmen may choose which manufacturers will supply them fire extinguishers.
Alto also said firemen are not authorized to recommend or sell fire extinguishers to traders applying for fire clearance.
Councilor Jesus Sangil asked the council to invite various traders’ organizations including the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporate during an en banc committee hearing scheduled on May 8.

CLARK FREEPORT — Executives of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) are assuring officials of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) that the alternative site for the school’s Central Luzon campus based inside the freeport is among the priorities of the administration of newly installed CDC chief.
Mariz Mandocdoc, CDC assistant vice president for Permits and Licensing and Monitoring, said the corporation recognizes the importance of keeping the PSHS campus in Clark.
“It is among the first actions taken by top officials at the CDC to brief newly appointed CDC Chair and OIC Eduardo Oban Jr. about the Pisay campus’ current situation,” said Mandocdoc.
According to Mandocdoc, the CDC has offered two alternative sites to PSHS officials, the “institutional zone at Lilly Hill” and Bldg. 6376, which is located at the Philippine Air Force (PAF) area here.
On July 5, 2011, former CDC President Felipe Antonio B. Remollo and PAF 600th Air Base Wing Commander Brigadier General Fred Payawan agreed that Building 6376 and its surrounding vacant lots, the PAF occupied earlier, will be turned over to the CDC.
Soon after meeting with the PAF, Mandocdoc stressed that Remollo had immediately offered to Pisay officials to use Bldg. 6376, located at the Air Force City area, as an alternative to Lilly Hill.
However, PAF officials said they are still waiting for “a favorable decision” and approval from higher authorities in the Department of National Defense.
“Negotiations with the PAF for the use of Bldg. 6376 are still ongoing and since time is of the essence, it is imperative that the CDC provide Pisay stakeholders an area conducive to education, which is why we have expedited the development of Lilly Hill,” Mandocdoc said.
In May 2011, the CDC’s Corporate Planning Department (CPD) identified the institutional site at Lilly Hill, which is located in a prime location adjacent to the duty-free shops here.
According to the CPD, PSHS officials have signified their preference to the Lilly Hill area “over other areas offered by the CDC” since the budget allocation their Central Luzon campus here will expire at the end of the 2011 Academic Year.
Angelo C. Lopez, Jr., manager of the CDC Public Relations Department, reiterated the CDC’s response to PSHS officials’ request.
“The CDC, including the majority of stakeholders here in Clark, wants the Pisay (PSHS) Central Luzon campus to be based inside Freeport,” Lopez said.
“To have the Pisay Central Luzon campus inside Clark is a valuable contribution to the educational needs of the future leaders of the country,” he added.
He also stressed that graduates of the PSHS Central Luzon campus “could, likewise, serve as future leaders of the Clark Freeport.”

ANGELES CITY – The city was awarded by the Central Luzon Growth Corridor Foundation Incorporated (CLGCFI) as the region’s Best LGU for its excellent implementation of the streamlined procedure on the issuance of mayor’s permits.
“This is a clear indication that our city is really serious in providing fast, accountable and transparent public service, and this award is a manifestation of our efforts,” Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said during the 6th Recognition of Outstanding Local Government Units (LGU) Implementing the Streamlining Program in Mayor’s Permit Issuance held Wednesday at the Fontana Leisure Park, Clark Freeport Zone.
Angeles City emerged as the sole recipient of the award in the highly urbanized city category. The city was also nominated for the Best One-Stop-Shop (BOSS) in Central Luzon.
This award recognizes cities that provide simple, effective, transparent and fast delivery of services to investors and business applicants. Such initiative makes transactions with the City of San Fernando more customer-friendly, thus elevating the level of competitiveness of Central Luzon as an investment destination.
“With this recognition, we can say that we are fostering significant growth in Angeles City because we are making applications and transactions for business permits and licenses faster in our city.” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan attributes this award to the city’s compliance to the provisions of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of re-engineering the business processes and transactions through computerization.
“This recognition will surely earn the trust of our constituents and prospected investors. We will generate greater income for the city in effect,” the mayor added.
The city received a plaque of recognition and a P25,000 cash award.
At present, Central Luzon is projected to have 100 percent compliance to the Streamlining Program.
Angeles City is among the eight pioneer-LGUs complying with the program.
The streamlining program is a flagship project of the CLGCFI, in cooperation with the DTI and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
DTI regional director and CLGCFI member Blesilda Lantayona said the annual recognition seeks to acknowledge the efforts of local chief executives and their Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO) staff to eliminate red tape and reduce the cost of doing business in their respective municipalities and cities.
Lantayona added that turn-around time, client feedback, internal monitoring system and organizational development served as the criteria in the selection of awardees.
