Bong Revilla: No rift with Lacson amid sons’ upcoming vice-gubernatorial fight in Cavite

Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. over the weekend downplayed a possible rift with fellow Cavite native Sen. Panfilo Lacson over reports their sons are to slug it out in the vice gubernatorial race in Cavite in 2013.

Revilla, in a radio interview, said Sunday that if the electoral showdown pushes through, it will be a “friendly and fair” fight.

“Hindi siguro dapat maapektuhan ‘yan,” he said in an interview on dzBB radio, when asked if the upcoming matchup will affect his working relations with Lacson.

According to Revilla, his son Jolo will run for vice governor in the 2013 elections under the Magdalo-Lakas alliance, alongside reelectionist Gov. Jonvic Remulla.

Earlier reports indicated Lacson’s son Ronald Jay is also running for the vice gubernatorial post.

“I think it’s going to be a friendly competition if ever at umasa sila na patas ang laban. Walang personalan ang labanan,” the elder Revilla said.

“Ang importante rito, may pagpipilian ang mamamayan ng Cavite kaya napakapalad ng mamamayan ng Cavite,” he added.

The elder Revilla is with the Lakas party allied with former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo. Lacson does not belong to any political party.

Revilla said the Magdalo-Lakas alliance will swear in new members on his birthday on September 25.

He also said he does not expect reports of Jolo’s reported relationship with actress Jodi Sta. Maria to be a factor in the vice gubernatorial race.

Sta. Maria is the former wife of Ronald Jay’s brother Panfilo Jr.

“Sa aspeto na ‘yan ayoko makialam sa personal na buhay. Hindi tayo nagkulang sa pangaral kay Jolo,” the elder Revilla said.

He also said that while his son is now 24, he has had some experience in public service, serving as barangay captain and president of the association of barangay captains in Bacoor. – KG, GMA News

PDEA chief says sacked deputy a ‘security risk’

The chief of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Monday said Carlos Gadapan, the PDEA official who claimed to have been wrongfully ousted from his post, was removed for being a “security risk.”

During the Senate investigation on the issue, PDEA director general Jose Gutierrez said Gadapan was removed from office due to various reasons.

He said that Gadapan’s wife allegedly turned into a drug dependent and then became the girlfriend of a policeman who was killed by an unidentified gunman.

He likewise said Gadapan had been tarnishing PDEA’s name, specifically to the Philippine National Police.

“Hindi ko alam ano talaga gusto niya. I think it’s all about money matters,” he said.

Gutierrez was pertaining to the time when he supposedly denied Gadapan’s request for a P250,000 operating budget since he had agents on the ground already.

Gutierrez said the “last straw” was when Gadapan reportedly informed a Filipino Chinese subject of surveillance of the identity of a PDEA agent who was tailing him.

“Gadapan provided secret intelligence information…his disclosure made him a security risk,” he said, after which he made a report to President Benigno Aquino III to recommend Gadapan’s removal.

For his part, Gadapan, who was also present in the hearing, asked the committee to provide him a copy of Gutierrez’s recommendation to Aquino so that he will be able to answer the allegations point by point.

Gadapan, who was PDEA deputy director general before he was ousted, had claimed that that he was removed from office because of his actions informing Gutierrez on his boss’ wife’s gambling problems.

But during the hearing, Gutierrez said the issue was about his wife. “Never po ako nagalit sa kanya,” he said.

MMDA men dance Gangnam Style at flag ceremony

Gangnam Style, the hit dance craze that recently set a world record as the most liked video on YouTube, has infected the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority as well.

On Monday morning, a group of MMDA uniformed personnel danced to the hit Korean pop song by Psy following the Monday flag ceremony, to cheers from colleagues.

MMDA traffic discipline office head Yves Gonzalez posted a one-and-a-half-minute video of the dance number on his Twitter account.

“Actually sumayaw din si Chairman. I think the media cameras caught that part,” he added.

Just last week, Guinness World Records (GWR) said the K-pop hit set a world record for being the most liked video on video-sharing site YouTube.

GWR also noted the song marked the first time a South Korean artist had topped the iTunes charts.

The video, which has generated many spoofs, is perceived by many to poke fun at the lavish lifestyle in South Korea’s Gangnam district. –KG, GMA News

Gloria Arroyo complains about swallowing, shin pains

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday complained anew about difficulty in swallowing and a pain in the shin.

In a post on her Twitter account, the former Philippine leader said she was looking forward to a physical therapy scheduled for the day.

“Swallowing difficulty and shooting pain in the shin again. Looking forward to today’s physical therapy,” she said.

Mrs. Arroyo now represents the second district of Pampanga in the House of Representatives.

The Senate and the House are on a break and will resume session on October 8.

Anatomic problem

Earlier this month, Mrs. Arroyo said she is exploring alternative treatment for her anatomic problem, including stem cell therapy.

Last August, the former chief executive underwent treatment for an anatomic problem that caused her to choke on her food.

On Aug. 30, a dzBB report quoted Mrs. Arroyo’s spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn as saying the former leader’s condition has improved such that she is allowed to occasionally remove her titanium neck brace.

But Horn was quoted in the report as saying the Mrs. Arroyo must still wear the brace in potentially risky situations, including when climbing stairs or going out of the house.

Mrs. Arroyo had been told by doctors to wear the brace after she was brought to the St. Luke’s Medical Center due to a pinched nerve in 2011.

Last Aug. 2, she was rushed to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City after choking on a piece of melon and a piece of “bacon-like” meat.

VMMC head Dr. Nona Legaspi said they advised Mrs. Arroyo to rest, after noting she looked dehydrated and “very weak” when she was brought there.

She said Mrs. Arroyo had also been advised that pain can be cumulative, and the body should be allowed to heal.

In late July, Mrs. Arroyo left the VMMC after a Pasay court allowed her to post a P1-million bail for the electoral sabotage charge against her.

She had spent eight months in hospital arrest since Nov. 15 last year, first at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City, then at the VMMC starting last December.

But Mrs. Arroyo also faces re-arrest if the Sandiganbayan issues a warrant for her arrest for charges of plunder stemming from irregularities at the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. — RSJ, GMA

Cebu mayor questions lawmaker on P400M ‘political gimmick’

CEBU CITY –- Mayor Michael Rama described as “an act of treason” Representative Tomas Osmeña’s decision to divert the P400-million savings from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) outside of the city.
As the representative of the city’s south district constituents, Osmeña should focus his PDAF on the city, Rama said.
“It’s an expensive political gimmickry. It can even be considered as an act of treason because those funds were intended for Cebu City,” the mayor said.
Sought for comment, Osmeña again explained he decided to give his congressional funds to Representative Eduardo Gullas (Cebu Province, 1st district) because Rama is blocking his projects, including those of his allies.
Gullas announced last Saturday that Osmeña has agreed to yield the P400 million in favor of the road-widening project from the City of Naga to Sibonga town, which is ongoing.
“Who was the one who turned down the projects? He (Rama) is such a waste to Cebu City and to me. He is a waste of time. So I gave it to Cebu Province where he can’t say no,” he said.
But another possible reading is that Osmeña wants to ensure Gullas’s support for the Liberal Party’s candidate for governor in 2013, former Cebu City councilor Hilario “Junjun” Davide III.
Osmeña enumerated the projects that he claimed were opposed by the mayor.
The congressman said these include the P2-million grant that was supposed to be given by Senator Serge Osmeña III, his brother, to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).
Serge withdrew the financial aid and transferred it to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) because Rama allegedly refused to sign the memorandum of agreement for the grant.
While CCMC is operated by the City Government, the VSMMC in Cebu City remains under the Department of Health.
Osmeña also recalled Rama’s opposition to the two flyovers that Representative Rachel Del Mar (Cebu City, north district) proposed, the flyover he proposed in Barangay Lahug, as well as his P300 million worth of road concreting projects in the south district.
“Rama is just being consistent (in opposing projects),” the congressman said.
Osmeña and Rama, who were political allies for at least six terms, are expected to face off in the 2013 mayoral elections. (PDF of Sun.Star Cebu)
