LOS ANGELES — What is “Two and a Half Men” with Jon Cryer and without Charlie Sheen? Really good was the Emmy Awards verdict Sunday as Cryer claimed the best comedy actor trophy.
“Don’t panic, people. Something has clearly gone terribly wrong. I’m stunned,” said Cryer, who on the red carpet before the show has expressed confidence he wouldn’t win. Among others, he beat out two-time winner Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory.”
Ashton Kutcher, who joined the show after Sheen was fired, wasn’t nominated.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honored as best actress in comedy for “Veep.”
“Modern Family” made it look easy as the comedy’s Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen claimed supporting actor awards.
Stonestreet was funny and touching as he accepted the best supporting actor award for his role as half of a devoted gay couple on “Modern Family.”
“I wouldn’t be standing here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson, there is no Cam without Mitch,” he said, saluting his co-star. “We get the awesome opportunity to play these two characters on TV and show America and the world what a loving couple we can be just like everybody else.”
Then he turned saucy: “I never knew I’d be on TV as a gay man, but I love the pictures of hairy chests you guys are sending me, it’s really amazing. Thank you for those.”
Bowen got a huge shout-out from castmate Sofia Vergara.
“Oh, that’s my Sofia, God bless you. … This is an embarrassment of riches,” Bowen said.
The show started with bathroom humor: A filmed bit with Kathy Bates, Zooey Deschanel and other nominated actresses prepping in the restroom, then discovering a weeping Jimmy Kimmel lamenting a Botox reaction he said would keep him off stage as host.
“You look beautiful,” he was reassured. “You look like a ‘Real Housewife.'”
Viewers of the skit may have been puzzled by a nude Lena Dunham, the creator-star of “Girls,” who’s routinely brave about showing skin on the HBO comedy.
Standup comic Louis C.K. won the Emmy Award for best comedy writing for “Louis C.K.”
HBO came into the night with a leading 17 creative arts Emmys from a Sept. 15 ceremony honoring technical and other achievements. CBS was second with 13, followed by PBS with 11. Discovery received six awards, NBC got five and ABC and the Cartoon Network won four each. Fox received two trophies.
Emmy has to prove herself a winner with the audience. After rebounding somewhat to 13.5 million viewers in 2010 after an all-time low in 2008 of 12.3 million, last year’s show drew 12.4 million viewers airing on Fox. The ceremony rotates annually among the four major networks. (AP)

Prophet film protesters clash with Greek police

ATHENS, Greece — Greek riot police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse Muslim protesters who clashed with officers Sunday during a rally against a film produced in the U.S. that denigrates Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. No injuries were reported.
A general strike in Bangladesh shut down schools, transportation and businesses, while a few hundred people peacefully marched in Pakistan. Iranian students burned flags in Tehran to protest the recent publication of lewd caricatures of Muhammad by a French satirical weekly.
In Athens, six people were detained during the demonstration at a central square, police said. About 600 people attended the rally, which featured heated speeches, but was mostly peaceful.
The crowd then wanted to march to the U.S. Embassy, which is about three kilometers (two miles) away from Omonia Square. Some tried to break through police lines several times, but riot officers pushed them back.
The violence occurred at the end of the rally, when small groups of protesters threw objects at police. Three cars were damaged and three storefronts smashed.
Banners were displayed in English, denouncing the film and called on the U.S. to hang the filmmaker. One told President Barack Obama “we are all with Osama,” referring to Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader who was killed in a U.S. raid in Pakistan in May 2011.
The amateurish film, which portrays the prophet as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester, has sparked violent protests throughout the Muslim world for nearly two weeks. The violence linked to protests over the film has resulted in the deaths of at least 49 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.
About 300 Iranian students protested against the caricatures that appeared in the French weekly. They rallied in front of the French Embassy in Tehran, burning French, U.S. and Israeli flags and chanting “death to France” and “down with the U.S.” They called for the expulsion of French ambassador to Iran.
In an interview to be aired Monday on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was asked about the protests in the Muslim world.
“Offending the Holy Prophet is quite ugly,” Ahmadinejad said. “This has very little or nothing to do with freedom and freedom of speech. This is the weakness of and the abuse of freedom, and in many places it is a crime.
“But we also believe that this must also be resolved in a humane atmosphere, in a participatory environment and we do not like anyone losing their lives or being killed for any reason anywhere in the world.”
In Bangladesh, schools and businesses were closed and transportation was disrupted across the south Asian country as hardline Islamic groups protesting the film enforced a general strike.
The strike was called in response to police action Saturday against supporters of the groups who rallied in the capital, Dhaka, to denounce the film. Dozens of people were arrested and scores injured Saturday as protesters clashed with police. Several vehicles were burned, including a police van. No violence was immediately reported during Sunday’s strike.
About 300 Christians, Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims peacefully rallied in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, to protest the film.
“There will be no peace in the world until we respect each other’s religion,” Sikh leader Deedar Singh said.

Palace hopes Congress to immediately pass 2013 budget, FOI bill

MALACANANG expressed hope Saturday that Congress could soon approve the P2-trillion budget for 2013 as well as the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill to boost the economy and give the public easier access to government information.
In a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte thanked lawmakers for prioritizing the budget deliberations.
“It seems that both Houses are making good time on deliberating on the budget, we thank our legislators for that. And apparently they are on track just like the earlier pronouncements of Speaker Belmonte and of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile that they will be paying due attention to the budget. And so far, we are on track for the deliberation,” she said.
On the FOI bill, Valte said the Palace hopes that discussions go well when lawmakers meet this October to tackle the proposed measure.
She said it is a good development that the congressional committee will be hearing again the FOI Bill.
Both Representative Erin Tanada, the author of the FOI Bill in the House, and Senate committee chair Senator Gregorio Honasan, have essentially adopted the draft coming from the Palace.
Valte said many provisions of the Malacanang draft were adopted by the House and the Senate.
The House of Representatives on Thursday night approved on second reading the proposed P2 trillion national budget for 2013 aimed at boosting the country’s economic growth.
The 2013 budget is similar to last year’s with the biggest chunk of the funding going to the Department of Education with P292.7 billion, which is 22.6 percent more than this year’s P238.8 billion. (SDR/Sunnex)

Aquino off to Brunei on Sunday for ‘informal diplomacy’

MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III will engage in “informal diplomacy” by attending the royal banquet to be hosted by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on Sunday for his newlywed daughter, Malacanang said.
“President Aquino will be attending the wedding of the daughter of the Sultan of Brunei. Given that it is important to continue to strengthen our relations with fellow Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries, the President will be engaging in some informal diplomacy,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a message on Friday.
The President’s Sunday trip to the sultanate is his second visit since he made an official visit to Brunei in June 2011.
While in Brunei, Aquino will be assisted by Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Nestor Ochoa, Philippine Minister and Consul General Raymond Balatbat and Philippine Minister and Consul Celeste Balatbat.
Princess Hajah Hafiza Sururul Bolkiah, 32, wed Haji Muhammad Ruzaini on Thursday. She is the fifth child of the Sultan and his wife Queen Saleha.
The President will be joined by leaders of Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand during the occasion. Other leaders and VIPs are also invited to grace the wedding ceremony.

LP-NPC alliance not sealed yet

THE ruling Liberal Party (LP) and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) have yet to formalize its coalition for the 2013 midterm elections even after its leaders met for the fifth time on Friday.
The NPC of businessman Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. is fielding reelectionist Senator Loren Legarda and Cagayan Representative Jack Enrile, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, but it is not stopping the two candidates from joining the LP line-up.
Legarda is also being wooed by the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of former President Joseph Estrada and Vice President Jejomar Binay. She said she will announce her decision on Monday, September 24.
The younger Enrile, meanwhile, has been part of the UNA ticket since summer.
“We are still finalizing with the LP so I don’t want to preempt the results of the ongoing talks but we are steadfast with our commitment to support our partymates Senator Legarda and Congressman Enrile, whichever coalition they end up with,” Valenzuela City Representative Rex Gatchalian, NPC spokesperson, said in a text message.
Gatchalian said NPC will collaborate with its local LP counterparts to see to it that “our national candidates’ campaign and message resonates throughout the country.”
“The complementary NPC and LP networks nationwide will vastly improve the reach and scope of our national campaign,” he said.
Cavite Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya, also the incoming Transportation and Communications Secretary and LP’s secretary general, said an alliance agreement will be signed next week, just days before the filing of certificates of candidacy.
“Just a little more pending districts (we have to discuss with NPC). We have a draft alliance agreement which should be signed next week,” he said in a text message. “No final decision on the Senate slate yet,” he added.
Aside from the NPC, the LP will also be in alliance with the Nacionalista Party (NP) of Senator Manny Villar.

Philippines, China agree to resolve outstanding issues

THE Philippines and China have expressed a mutual desire to resolve the outstanding issues concerning both countries while moving forward with their bilateral relations, Malacanang said Saturday.
In an interview over a government-run radio station, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte read the press release of presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda concerning the recent trip of Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II to China.
Roxas is designated as President Benigno Aquino III’s Special Envoy to meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping in the 9th China-Asean Expo held in Nanning, China.
During the meeting, which took place last Friday, Lacierda’s statement said Xi expressed appreciation to Aquino in sending Roxas, which showed the importance of the bilateral relations of the two nations for the Philippines.
“This showed the importance that President Aquino attaches to Philippines-China relations,” he said quoting Xi.
Roxas, for his part, expressed confidence that he has faithfully delivered Aquino’s message to the Chinese government.
“We had a frank and candid exchange of views and I am satisfied that I was able to faithfully convey President Aquino’s message. Vice President Xi promised to bring President Aquino’s message to the attention of Chinese President Hu Jintao,” Roxas said.
Roxas added that the “discussions were constructive and the talks were conducted in a cordial atmosphere.”
Lacierda said the meeting focused on the current outstanding issues between the two countries as well as on the other dimensions of their bilateral relationship.
The two nations are locked in a longstanding territorial dispute over areas in the West Philippine Sea, particularly the Scarborough or Panatag shoal.
Joining Roxas in the meeting were Lacierda, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Erlinda Basilio and Philippine Embassy Beijing Charge d’Affaires Alex Chua. (SDR/Sunnex)

UP annexes 8th cheerdance title

University of the Philippines Pep Squad capitalized on backbreaking stunts and emphasized equality and freedom to grab a record-tying eighth cheerdance title in the 75th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) on Saturday.
Despite failing to perfect the final lift, UP wowed the 19,509-strong crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City by beginning the show with repeated homage to the Oblation, the concrete statue fronting the university which depicts a man’s selfless act to serve the country.
“It’s the symbol of our liberties and we have shown a lot of stunts that are at par with international standards because we joined and won competitions abroad,” former Pep Squad co-skipper Laurence Martin Bautista told reporters.
“We know that perfection is the rule of the game in UAAP but we trusted the difficulty of our stunts. We just stuck to that point,” he added.
Entering the court with shaved heads, Bautista said there was hesitation on the part of his female teammates even if it was done for charity. Hair donations will be manufactured as wigs for cancer patients in celebration of the national awareness month for people with alopecia or baldness.
“Medyo natakot ang mga girls kasi first time nilang kalbuhin at siyempre hesitant sila sa magiging hitsura nila, parang it turned out na okay at lumitaw ang confidence namin lahat,” Bautista said, adding the idea came from multi-titled coach Lalaine Pereña.
With the feat, UP registered its second three-peat, the first being from 1999 to 2001. University of Santo Tomas, the other school with eight crowns, still holds the longest winning streak at five (2002-2006).
“We want to show to other schools that we are a free university, that we don’t fear anyone and we even shave our heads. We’re free and that was seen in the routine,” Bautista, who is set to graduate next year with a degree in Business Administration and Accountancy (BAA).
UP took home P340,000 while Far Eastern University (FEU) finished second to settle for P200,000 while surprise third placer National University (NU) got P140,000. Banking on a Disney-inspired theme, this is the first time since the competition began in 1994 that NU has made a podium finish.
Missing out the top three for the second straight year is the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe after finishing fourth. Last year’s runner-up La Salle Animo Squad took fifth while the Ateneo de Manila Blue Babble Batallion, Adamson Pep Squad, and University of the East occupied the sixth to eighth spots, respectively.
UP also bagged the title for best group stunts with FEU and NU placing second and third, respectively. UP rookie Nicolette Erica Ambulo meanwhile was picked as this year’s Samsung Stunner.
A foreign panel of judges rated the performances this year. They were Huang Yu Chun (president of Chinese Taipei Cheerleading Federation), Joe Jackson (USASF Safety/Legality Judge), Manuel Malonzo (Associate Director of Chameleon Dance Theater), Julien Leblond and Eftimiu Luminita (coach of Women’s Gymnastics of the Municipal Sports Club).

Pagasa issues thunderstorm advisory in Metro Manila

MANILA — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a thunderstorm advisory in Metro Manila at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, alerting residents to take precautionary measures against heavy rains, strong gusty winds, lightning and possible flash floods.
Pagasa said that thunderstorm is expected to affect the cities of Manila, Quezon, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, Taguig, Las Pinas, Paranaque, Muntinlupa and Pasay within one to two hours.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said that Tropical Storm “Lawin” slowed down as it changed its course in a north-northwest direction.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, “Lawin” was located at 395 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar (11.8°N, 129.5°E), packed with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph.
The weather agency said that storm signal No. 2 remains aloft over Eastern Samar which is expected to experience winds of 61 to 100 kph within the next 24 hours while signal No. 1 (30-60 kph winds) is still hoisted over Sorsogon, Leyte, Northern and Western Samar.
Pagasa advised residents where signal storms are hoisted to be wary of possible flash floods and landslides.
The weather bureau also alerted those living in coastal areas against big waves.
Fishing boats and other small seacraft were advised not to venture into the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to big waves generated by the storm. (PNA)

4 dams in Luzon open spill gates

MANILA — Four dams in Luzon opened their spill gates on Saturday to let out excess waters ahead of Tropical Storm “Lawin” which is expected to bring moderate to intense rains this weekend, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Oyie Pagulayan, Pagasa hydrologist, said Angat and Ipo dams in Bulacan, Binga dam in Benguet, and Magat dam in Isabela continue to spill water as their respective reservoirs have breached the normal levels.
Pagulayan said that as of 10 a.m. Saturday, the water level at Ipo dam reached 100.64 meters, above the normal high level of 100.20 meters, while Angat’s water level was at 211.78 meters, surpassing its normal high level of 210.00 meters.
Ipo dam opened one gate by 0.7 meter while Angat dam opened one gate by one meter, she said.
Authorities said water from Ipo dam is likely to affect low-lying areas along the Angat River. Residents living in those areas have been advised to be alert for possible increase in water level downstream and to take precautionary measures.
Pagulayan also said that one gate of Binga dam remains open by 0.3 meter as its 574.51-metr water level is close to breaching the spilling level of 575.00 meters.
Binga’s water flows downstream to the San Roque dam in Pangasinan, which can contain the water spillage.
San Roque dam’s water level stood at 273.14 meters as of 6 a.m. Saturday, or way below its normal 280.00-meter level.
Pagulayan said that two gates of Magat dam in Isabela remained open by three meters as its water level rose to 191.35 meters, or beyond its normal level of 190.00 meters.
The La Mesa dam in Novaliches, Quezon City, meanwhile, was downgraded to green alert or in operational level from red alert status, as its water level has returned to normal following improved weather condition in Metro Manila.
As of 10 a.m. Saturday, La Mesa dam’s water level stood at 78.94 meters, or below the spilling level of 80.15 meters, Pagulayan said.
Water levels of Pantabangan dam in Nueva Ecija, Caliraya dam in Laguna and Ambuklao dam in Benguet are either below or at normal levels, she added. (PNA)

‘Lawin’ intensifies, moves closer to Samar, Bicol

MANILA — Tropical Storm “Lawin,” the 12th cyclone in the country this year, intensified while moving closer to the Samar and Bicol area on Friday night, the state weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed the province of Eastern Samar under storm warning signal number 1 on Friday afternoon.
Areas under storm warning signal number 1 will experience winds from 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph).

As of 10 p.m. Friday, Lawin was located 500 kilometers (km) east of Catarman, Northern Samar and was moving west at nine kilometers per hour (kph).
Lawin has maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up 120 kph, said Pagasa.
The weather bureau forecast Lawin to be at 310 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar by Saturday evening and at 160 km east of Virac, Catanduanes by Sunday evening.
Estimated rainfall amount is from 10-25 millimeter per hour (heavy – intense) within the 600 km diameter of the tropical storm.
