DAVAO CITY — Former House speaker Prospero Nograles said he is “tired and retired” when asked if he is seeking an elective position come 2013 elections.
Nograles said his time has passed and his son, Representative Karlo Alexei Nograles (1st district, Davao City), could well replace him.
“…It’s Karlo’s age group and generation now and it’s probably their turn to get involved and help the country, especially Davao and Mindanao,” Nograles said.
“No slant, no intrigues anymore. Just want to be left alone. It’s Karlo now,” he added.
The elder Nograles has been out of the limelight after losing the mayoralty race to Mayor Sara Duterte in 2010. Unconfirmed reports showed that he is presently in the US.
Nograles’ retirement is unexpected by many, especially by his arch political rival, Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. The Dutertes have been anticipating another round of a head-on fight with the Nograleses in 2013.
Rumor has it that the elder Nograles will again seek the first congressional district while his son Karlo will run for mayor. But the former House speaker’s latest statement has debunked all rumors.
But Vice Mayor Duterte does not believe Nograles’ retirement plan.

MANILA, Philippines – Around 200 Metropolitan Manila Development Authority agents on Thursday drove away several sidewalk vendors near the Baclaran Redemptorist Church in Parañaque City.
Personnel of the MMDA-Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group arrived at the area and started driving away the ambulant vendors who peddle their wares using wooden push carts, a radio report said.
The vendors, for fear of their merchandise being confiscated, scampered away toward the service road of the Roxas Blvd., the report said.
The MMDA personnel also checked every commercial stall in the area to make sure they are not blocking the road, the report added.
The MMDA conducted the clearing operations in preparation for the holiday rush.
The agency will be posting around 60 MMDA personnel in the area after Thursday’s clearing operation to prevent illegal vendors returning to the place.

DAVAO CITY–Once drawing flak from environmental groups for cutting trees in Baguio City to put up a mall, SM Premiere said it expected to reap praises this time with the opening of its largest mall in Mindanao on Friday.
Debby Go, SM Premiere’s assistant vice president for Mindanao, said its first SM premiere mall in Mindanao, which was built in Barangay Lanang here, is an “example of green architecture, complete with rain catchment facility and other power and water saving features.”
SM Lanang, the country’s fifth SM premiere mall, is the first of such establishment equipped with a 550-cubic meter rain catchment system.
Go said instead of being paved with concrete, the mall’s open parking area also uses “grass pavers” to minimize run-off water during heavy rain.
She said the mall will also use potable water only for its food and kitchen needs and will use recycled water for the plants and other maintenance work.
On the business side, Go said SM Lanang was also designed to entice as many mall-goers with its modern and advance features, from an Imax theatre to international designer brands and the best in fine dining.
The 466-seat Imax theatre, the first of its kind in Mindanao, will provide moviegoers “the height of 3D experience,” she said.
“With Imax, the experience is different,” Noelle Martin, assistant theatre manager of SM Lanang, said.
“You just don’t watch the movie, you are in the movie,” Martin added.
Therese Lapena, SM Lanang manager, said of the 273 tenants targeted by the mall, 180 or 70 per cent have already been awarded their spaces and were set to open shop within the year.
The four-level SM Lanang also features an SMX convention center.
Daphne Alojado, senior manager of SMX Davao, said at least six events were already scheduled to be held at the 7,800 SMX Davao, only the second of its kind in the Philippines, can accommodate 3,000 persons in a banquet setup.
It also features five function rooms, a car lift, two freight elevators and male and female restrooms, among others.

NEW YORK—Sales of Apple’s new iPhone 5 broke records in its launch weekend with sales above five million, a figure that disappointed analysts and pressured the company’s share price.
Apple shares fell more than two percent in opening trade Monday before paring losses, as analysts said the Silicon Valley tech giant was facing supply constraints, which limited sales of the new smartphone.
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, in a statement early Monday.
Apple opened sales Friday of the latest version of the iconic smartphone, leading to long queues in the nine launch countries.
The phone will be available in 22 more countries by the end of the week and 100 countries by year’s end.
Cook said that “while we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone,” he said.
Apple also said that the new mobile operating system iOS 6 had been downloaded for “more than 100 million iOS devices” since it was launched last week.
Analysts expect massive sales of the iPhone 5, which is lighter, slimmer and more powerful than its predecessors, even though the device has garnered only lukewarm reviews and has drawn complaints for its glitch-prone maps program.
But at 1440 GMT, Apple shares were down 1.42 percent at $690.17.
Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets said the iPhone sales figures were “below our expectations” and added that “we were at the lower end of expectations.”
“We believe this shortfall is largely due to supply availability and the fact that most consumers are opting for the pre-order option,” White said in a note to clients.
“We remain aggressive buyers of Apple on any weakness in the stock price this morning as we believe Apple has another blockbuster on its hands with the iPhone 5 and we expect the ‘iPad Mini’ to launch in the coming weeks.”
Last week, Deutsche Bank analysts boosted their estimates for overall iPhone sales, saying they expected between five and six million in the opening weekend and 138 million by the end of 2012.
Ben Reitzes at Barclays said Apple is “facing significant production constraints” but that this will only push back sales a bit.
“We believe our estimates for Apple could still be conservative after the September quarter. We reiterate our overweight rating and our $810 price target,” he said in a note to clients.
Some analysts argue, however, that Apple has fallen short, as other companies such as Samsung improve rival offerings powered by Google’s Android operating system.
Apple also faced a barrage of criticism after it ditched Google’s maps application in favor of its own program riddled with errors. Many users protested that the new maps misplace some landmarks and leave others off altogether.
