Angara asks Brillantes to stay

TEAM PNoy senatorial candidate Edgardo “Sonny” Angara on Thursday asked Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. to reconsider his resignation plan so he can lead the poll body into a peaceful and credible election next month.

“Chairman Brillantes should remain as Comelec head. He is on top of things and most of the major preparations for this election season. There are elections matters that he is the master of,” Angara said.

An emotional Brillantes has threatened to resign after the Supreme Court issued a status quo ante (SQA) order on Comelec rules limiting airtime for political advertisements for the May elections.

Brillantes said the High Court was apparently issuing Temporary Restraining Orders and SQA “without really seeing all of the consequences.”

Brillantes said he would meet with President Benigno Aquino to find out if he should stay as Comelec chief, pointing out that the SQA order was the fourth adverse ruling that the Comelec received from the high court in recent months.

Angara said that a transfer of leadership at this point, which would take place should Brillantes resign, would not be good for the poll body and the democratic processes.

“There would be major adjustments and transition pains should he resign. Our hope is that he does not and that he puts on hold any resignation plan until after the election is over,” he added.

Angara said the High Court’s SQA order which stopped the Comelec from enforcing its rules limiting political campaign advertisements that are broadcast by television and radio outfits on the run-up to the May 13 elections also caught them by surprise.

“It puts the candidates in limbo since we don’t know which rules to follow, the old ruling which was per station or the new ruling of the Comelec which is total minutes,” Angara said.

STA. RITA, Pampanga – Locals here, particularly from Barangay San Basilio, thanked Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (second district) for putting up a water system in their area, which they said has “changed their life tremendously.”

Residents welcomed Ang Galing Pinoy Rep. Mikey Arroyo, who represented his mother, and Mayor Yolly Pineda, Vice Mayor Homobono Guanlao, and re-electionist Board Member Art Salalila, during a house-to-house visit in the village where they thanked the younger Arroyo for the project.

Rowel Guevarra, a resident of San Basilio, told Arroyo and Pineda how the water system in their barangay has helped them in their everyday lives.

Guevarra said their families are very thankful for the water system, because it helped them in their basic needs.

“Water is life. Malaki po ang natipid namin. Hindi na kami nag-iigib ng tubig tuwing maliligo kami. Alam nyo naman po gaano kahirap mag-igib ng tubig. Nakatipid din po kami kasi hindi na kami nagpapalaba ng damit. Kami na po naglalaba dito sa bahay namin”, Guevarra said.

He said the locals greatly appreciate the efforts of Macapagal-Arroyo, because despite her situation, she has made it a point to extend services to her constituents.

“Kahit na po alam namin nakakulong siya ngayon, malaki po pasasalamat namin kay GMA kasi naaalala nya kami lagi at patuloy dumarating ang tulong nya sa amin,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, as representative of his mother, Mikey said the project is important since water is a necessity in one’s day-to-day living.

“This project is another testament to the untiring and unselfish desire of the former president to provide services to the people especially those in the countryside and to her fellow Kapampangans,” the younger Arroyo said.
