Port experts Subic Maritime Conference & Exhibit

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The upcoming Subic Bay Maritime Conference & Exhibit will be headlined by experts in the maritime transportation and logistics industry, who will discuss trends and developments in sea-borne trade.
No less that Susumu Naruse, secretary-general of the International Association of Ports & Harbors (IAPH), will be among the guest speakers when the conference unfolds here on August 23-24 at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center.
The IAPH, which was founded in 1955 in Los Angeles, has developed into a global alliance of ports, representing some 200 ports in 85 countries today.
It is now a non-profit and non-governmental organization headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with member-ports all together handling well over 60% of the world’s sea-borne trade and nearly 80% of the world container traffic.
Naruse’s talk will focus on “Best Practices in International Port Operations”, including the most effective, efficient and productive practices applied by international ports to various aspects of their operations.
Naruse will join a list of local and foreign maritime and trade experts, including Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II, National Economic and Development Authority director general Arsenio Balisacan, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman Roberto Garcia, and Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC) chairman Edgardo Abesamis, who will deliver presentations on topics ranging from Philippine economic prospects to Subic port’s viability as an alternative to Manila.
More than 300 domestic and international investors, shippers, and logistics and supply chain executives are expected to attend the maritime gathering in the Subic Bay Freeport.
Themed “Subic Bay: Asia’s Emerging Logistics and Investments Hub,” the conference is being organized by the SBMA and the SBITC, which operates Subic’s New Container Terminal.
The two-day event will highlight the advantages of investing in the Subic port complex, identify business opportunities in the area, give an update on government infrastructure projects, and pinpoint Subic Bay’s attractions as a transshipment port.

P3-M Educational Assistance of Cong. Ebdane benefits over 6k students

IBA,Zambales –Congressman Jun Omar C. Ebdane of the Second District of Zambales released on Friday a total of P3 million in educational assistance to 6,000 students in four national high schools in the province, making good on his campaign promise to help provide for abetter future for the youth.
Ebdane, who was elected congressman in a special poll only in February, said the educational assistance was meant to give poor students a fighting chance in their everyday struggle to learn and gain better opportunities for their families.
Of the P3-million assistance, P311,500 went to 623 students at the San Antonio National High School P470,500 to 941 students at the Cabangan National High School; and P679,000 to 1,358 students at the Botolan National High School. The bulk of the fund, or a total of P1,539,000, was to given a total of 3,078 students at the Zambales National High School in this town.
Ebdane also announced the implementation of a full scholarship program for top-notch graduates from local public elementary and high schools next year, as well as a similar scholarship program in athletics. “We’re stressing the merit system in our scholarship program, as opposed to other programs that simply gave away cash,” Ebdane explained to teachers, students and parents gathered at the Zambales National High School (ZNHS) here on Friday.

Family of Pinoy killed in Saudi blast to get assistance

MANILA — The Philippine government assured on Friday that it will provide the necessary assistance for the family of the Filipino who died in a fuel truck blast and building collapse in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview that the government already extended its condolences to the family of Florentino Santiago, a truck driver, who was among the 22 individuals killed in the blast on Thursday (Philippine time).
The explosion occurred after a fuel truck crashed into a flyover. The blast brought down an industrial building and torched nearby vehicles. Authorities in Riyadh said aside from the fatalities, more than 110 people were injured, 10 of them are Filipinos.

Filipino victims in Riyadh explosion to get aid from government

THE Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) assured help to the families of 11 overseas Filipino workers who were victims of a deadly fuel truck explosion in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) last week.
OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon said foremost of the agency’s concerns is the repatriation of the remains of the lone Filipino fatality in the tragedy, Florentino Santiago.
“We don’t have the date yet but we expect the repatriation to be soon since the cause of death has already been determined,” said Dimzon.
The labor official added that the family of Santiago will be receiving the death and burial benefits from Owwa worth P200,000 and P20,000, respectively.
Aside from the financial benefits, Dimzon added that Owwa will also provide livelihood assistance to the wife of Santiago and scholarship for one of his children.
On the other hand, she said Owwa will also provide assistance for the 10 other OFWs who were injured in the deadly blast.
“As of now, the injured OFWs are still in Riyadh but whatever assistance they would need we are ready to provide them,” Dimzon said.
Under OWWA rules, a member shall be entitled to disability/dismemberment benefits ranging from P2,000 to P50,000.
On Thursday, a truck carrying flammable liquids crashed into a concrete flyover in Riyadh resulting in a massive blast that resulted in the death of 23 people and injuring 111 others.
Records show there is an estimated 1.2 million OFWs in Saudi with many employed as engineers, nurses or hospital workers, accountants, office workers, construction workers, restaurant workers, and maids.

Palace junks anew calls to reimpose death penalty

MALACANANG on Saturday reiterated its stand against proposals to revive the death penalty in the country.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Philippine justice system should be reformed first before the capital punishment could be reimposed.
The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) called for the revival of the capital punishment in the country after Cyrish Magalang, a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, was stabbed to death on her way home in Cavite. Police said the victim sustained 49 stab injuries in the body.
Valte said there will be a status quo until such time that the government feels confident that those who may be sentenced to death are really guilty of the crime that they are being accused of.
And as the government overhauls the justice system, the Philippine National Police (PNP) must continue its strategy in fighting crime in the country, Valte added.
“The strategy now of the law enforcement agency is really to heighten its visibility, to increase the number of the patrolling policemen, and to reduce the man-hours on desk,” she said, noting that the increased police visibility has apparently lessened criminal activities in the country.
Aside from combating gruesome killings, the campaign against illegal drugs must also continue, the Palace official said.
“There should be no let up on our campaign not only against drugs but also to bring down the crime rates,” she said. (SDR/Sunnex)

Travelers’ recognition in Philippines seen to help boost tourists arrivals

MALACANANG raised optimism on Saturday that the recent travelers’ recognition, citing Luzon, Cebu, and Mindanao as among Asia’s top 10 islands, could boost tourist arrivals in the Philippines as the government targets a higher number of visitors this year.
International travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards considered Luzon, Cebu and Mindanao as Asia’s top 10 islands.
“Hopefully, this particular review will bring more tourists to us, not just tourists from abroad but also domestic travelers,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview.
“It’s truly more fun in the Philippines. If it’s three out of 10, hopefully more tourists come in,” she added.
Valte noted that it was evident that in today’s trend, there is increasing number of tourists visiting the Philippines, as she also hopes that visitors discover other beautiful places in the country.
Luzon trailed Bali, Indonesia, and Phuket, Thailand, as the third best island in Asia, with a readers’ choice rating of 78.9, ranking high in the criteria of friendliness, scenery, and ambience.
Cebu placed seventh with a score of 75.9, and Mindanao ranked at 10th scoring 62.8.
Other Asia’s top 10 islands include Hokkaido in Japan, Lombok in Indonesia, Langkawi in Malaysia, Koh Samui in Thailand, and Borneo in Malaysia.

MILF launches info drive on framework deal

MANILA – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has organized six groups to undertake a massive information campaign to explain to its constituents the framework agreement it signed with the government of the Philippines.
The framework deal is also called a roadmap to a final peace settlement that is expected by 2016. It grants minority Muslims in southern Philippines broad autonomy in exchange for ending more than 40 years of violence that has killed tens of thousands of people and crippled development.

Aftershocks, damage expected from latest Surigao quake

MANILA -– A 6.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur early Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was of tectonic origin and struck 20 kilometers (km) north 57 degrees east of the province’s capital Tandag.
The 2:17 a.m. tremor occurred at a depth of 78 kilometers, Phivolcs continued.
Latest available Phivolcs data show the earthquake was felt at intensity 5 in Tandag.
Phivolcs describe such intensity as “strong” and “generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.”
The earthquake was also felt at intensity 4 in Surigao City and Dapa municipality, Phivolcs continued.
Such intensity is “moderately strong’ and “felt generally by people indoors and some people outdoors,” Phivolcs noted.
Phivolcs further reported the earthquake was felt at intensity 3 in Surigao del Sur’s Bislig City and Agusan del Norte’s Butuan City.
Intensity 3 quakes are “weak” and “felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings,” Phivolcs added.

Light rains expected in some parts of Philippines

MANILA — Mindanao will experience light rains due to an inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) while a cold front will be across extreme Northern Luzon Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
An ITCZ is a merge of winds from different directions, which is also a breeding ground for a low pressure area.
Pagasa said Mindanao will be cloudy with occasional light to moderate rain showers or thunderstorms while Cagayan Valley and the Ilocos and Cordillera regions will have occasional light rains.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with isolated brief rain showers or thunderstorms.
Also, Pagasa said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast and east with slight to moderate seas.
The weather agency also said strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon may affect the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon.
“Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels alerted against big waves,” it said.
Pagasa forecaster Elvie Enriquez said there is still no weather disturbance or potential cyclone near the Philippine Area of Responsibility. (PNA)
