Futsal Program Draws ‘Gapo Kids to Sports

While most kids spent summer playing video games or watching TV at home, some Olongapo youngsters opted to kick-out their boredom in a fun and healthy way by learning a unique sport called Futsal.
More than 120 kids and 30 coaches took part in the Batang Gapo Futsal program of Redondo Peninsula Energy, Inc. (RP Energy) and the Amihan Football Club to learn the fundamentals of playing and coaching the indoor football sport.
The program which highlighted exciting championship games and an awarding ceremony at the Subic Gym of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Freeport, successfully introduced Futsal to 14 barangays in Olongapo City, Zambales.
Winners from the different age divisions included Barangay Mabayuan (12 and up), Barangay Mabayuan (10 and up) and Juventus School for the Gifted (8 and up). Cup finalists included Barangay East Bajac-Bajac (12 and up), Barangay East Bajac-Bajac (10 and up), and Barangay Mabayuan (8 and up).
“We are delighted with the outcome of our sports program. We not only introduced Futsal to the barangays, we also instilled among the youngsters the values of teamwork and respect, and developing skill and passion for the sport,” said Grant Smith, RP Energy project manager.
All the players received Batang Gapo Futsal medals while the winning teams received championship trophies. 30 coaches were also given certificates of completion for undergoing training on Futsal coaching and facilitation.
RP Energy CSR officer Vic Chan hopes the program will continue to gain the support of Olongapo residents so it could expand to the municipality of Subic.
Amihan FC president John Bayarong said they will explore the creation of a football event for teens and adults that will represent the RP Energy Futboleros to the annual Futbol Cup in Region III.
With the Batang Gapo Futsal program, RP Energy hopes more kids in Zambales will be interested to learn and play Futsal, not just to keep healthy but also to hone their football skills and be more competitive in the unique sport.

Vale Subic Bay Iron Ore Transshipment Operations In High Gear

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Brazil’s Vale Shipping Holdings Pte. Ltd. (VSH), along with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), formally launched a partnership for the transshipment of iron ore from this free port.
In a ceremony held at the Lighthouse Marina Resort here on June 1, VSH executives led by Jose Carlos Martins, executive officer for ferrous minerals operations, and officials of the SBMA led by Chairman and Administrator Roberto Garcia, announced the start of Vale’s transshipment business here.
VSH is an affiliate of Vale SA, the world’s largest producer of iron ore, which also controls the largest share of the seaborne market for iron ore. The company will carry out iron ore transshipment operations from its Valemax mother vessel to be anchored in Subic Bay, and then supply ore to smaller daughter vessels or feeders, which are either Panamax or Capesize types.
The project is expected to boost Subic’s port revenues by up to P70 million in the first year of operations alone. In his message during the project launch, Martins thanked the SBMA for its warm reception of the project and expressed hope that the partnership between his company and the SBMA would continue to grow and benefit both the Philippines and Brazil.
“The Philippines is growing now at almost the same pace with China, and the Philippines is emerging in the world economy,” Martins noted. “With this opportunity, now is our time — now is the time for countries like Brazil and the Philippines.”
Garcia, meanwhile, said that the Vale project will help thrust the Philippines forward in the maritime industry and stressed its importance to the SBMA. “In our strategic plan, we were very dead-set in continuing to promote the maritime business, and the Vale project is an important pillar of our strategy to maximize the use of Subic Bay,” he said.
“We have a very good future here,” Garcia added, pointing out that the Philippines is in a current state of rapid development, having achieved a 6.4 per cent GDP growth rate this first quarter compared to 4 per cent last year. “And what is outstanding is the fact that it is the second highest growth rate in the region, second only to China,” he added.
For his part, SBMA director and treasurer Joven Reyes said that the agency is much honored that VSH had chosen Subic Bay as its major transshipment port. “We hope even more that your business continues to move from success to success and that this partnership, which we are officially launching today, would lead to better and greater developments for Vale, Subic Bay, and of course our country down the road,” Reyes said.
The Vale project began in late 2010 when SBMA and Vale proposed a solution that matched Vale’s transshipment operations model with SBMA’s logistics business model.
Stefani Saño, SBMA senior deputy administrator for business and investment development, said that Vale needed to optimize its large-scale iron ore distribution and delivery system and the SBMA offered the bay as a suitable offshore location.
“This logistics model would allow Vale’s huge vessels to tranship the commodity with maximum efficiency in terms of time and cost, given the scale of operations required,” Saño added.
Saño also said that apart from Vale, the SBMA is also trying to attract more logistics companies to invest in the Freeport. He said that at least two logistics companies engaged in different line of commodities for offshore-based distribution operations have expressed interest in locating at Subic Bay.

he U.S. Embassy marked the end of the first phase in the construction of its new annex building with a “topping off” ceremony held at the construction site on the U.S. Embassy compound in Manila on Friday, May 18. The construction of the three-storey building is part of a $132-million project funded by the U.S. Department of State to improve the Embassy’s facilities in Manila and Pasay City.
U.S. Embassy Ambassador Harry K. Thomas, Jr. led Friday’s ceremony during which the new building was “topped-off” by placing a palm tree on the roof to signify the completion of basic structural construction.
The new office building’s interior will be completed in the coming months, and the building is slated to be ready for occupancy in the first half of 2013. The new Embassy building is the third major edifice to be constructed under the U.S. State Department’s multimillion-dollar project for U.S. Embassy Manila Last year, Ambassador Harry K. Thomas, Jr. inaugurated two new Embassy buildings, one on the Embassy compound in Pasay City, and another on the south portion of the Embassy’s Manila compound along Roxas Blvd. The building in Pasay houses offices and clinic facilities for the U.S. Veterans Administration, and the one in Manila now houses the Embassy’s Consular facility and other offices.
Twenty-eight U.S. Government agencies are represented at the U.S. Embassy in Manila, which is staffed by about 1,350 American and Filipino employees.

RP ENERGY’S BRIGADA ESKWELA BENEFITS 37 SCHOOLS

Redondo Peninsula Energy,Inc. (RP energy) launched its Brigada Eskwela Caravan at the Matain Elementary School in Subic, Zambales to provide repairs and clean-ups in 33 elementary and high schools in Subic.
RP Energy’s Brigada Eskwela Caravan is in Partnership with the Subic Municipal Government and the Department of Educaton (DepEd) Subic District.
‘We are thankful for RP Energy’s valuable support to DepEd’s Brgada Eskwela program. Their contributions will definitely go a long way towards creating a better learning environment for the schoolchildren of Subic,” said Mayor Jay Khonghun of Subic, who, together with the Municipal Council, DepEd and RP Energy officials, spearheaded the clean-up and painting of the classrooms.
The caravan is in line with DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela program, a nationwide voluntary effort of teachers, parents, students, community members, and organizations to do repairs and clean-ups on schools in preparation for the start of the school year.
Building and cleaning materials are mostly donated by local corporations and businesses.
“We are pleased to support the Brigada Eskwela program because it promotes the spirit of volunteerism and uplifts the quality of education by making schools more conducive to learning,” said Grant Smith, RP Energy project manager.
During the week-long event, more than 120 volunteers from RP Energy’s host communities will repair and clean up elementary school and annex buildings in Agusuhin, Aningway-Sacatihan, Batiawan (1 and 2), Cabitaugan, Calapacuan, Calapandayan, Cawag, Cawag Resettlement, Ilwas, Kinabuksan, Manggahan, Mapanao, Matain, Nagyantok, Naugsol, Pamatawan, San Isidro, Sto. Tomas, Subic Central and Tibag.

Another U.S. Submarine Cancels Subic Port Call

The USS Columbus is the second U.S. submarine in two weeks to cancel its port call here at the Subic Bay Freeport, former largest U.S. military installation outside the U.S. mainland which was shut down in 1992 after the Philippine senate voted to abrogate the RP-US Military Bases Agreement that allowed America to maintain military bases in the Philippines.
Earlier, USS Tucson, another U.S. submarine similar to USS Columbus, cancelled its port call in Subic after the first submarine, the USS Carolina, that docked in the freeport, in May generated negative media and cause-oriented groups’ reactions.
Residents and businessmen of Olongapo, Zambales and Bataan and the Subic Bay Freeport, however, favor the visit of U.S. ships because of the business activities they generate. Others also view the U.S. military’s presence in Subic as a deterrent to China’s moves to encroach on Philippines territory, particularly, the Scarborough or Panatag Shoals and the Spratleys, all in the West Philippines Sea, also known as South China Sea. Energy Sec: COAL PLANT OR BROWN-OUTS

LUZON will suffer shortage of electric power supply resulting to massive brown-outs in the next three to five years if construction of the planned $1.28B 600-megawatt coal power plant in Subic is delayed any further.
Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras issued the warning as various sectors in Subic and outlying communities continue to oppose the Subic coal plant citing, mainly, fears of environmental degradation in and around the Subic Bay area.
Almendras, however, has clarified that with modern technology, equipment and processes, the Subic Coal Plant will be clean and will not cause pollution as feared.
“The question of whether it will cause pollution or not has already been answered,” Almendras told reporters.
He cited as example the 660 Megawatt Masinloc Coal Plant to be currently “one of the cleanest coal plants in the world.”
Almendras also revealed that he has discuused with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chair & Administrator Roberto V. Garcia the importance of the planned Subic Coal Plant in propping-up power supply in the Luzon Grid.
“We told him (Garcia) we really need a power plant for such a time and we will be needing more of those reserves,” Almendras said, “we really cannot afford not to have a new power plant by 2015.”
Almendras also pointed out that power demand and consumption has been growing and without, or even delay of, the construction of the Redondo Peninsula Energy, Inc.’s (RP Energy) Subic Coal Plant, there will be no other power source that could take its place.
Manila Electric Company’s subsidiary Meralco PowerGen Corp. owns 50% plus two shares in RP Energy whileTherma Power Inc. of Aboitiz and Taiwan Cogeneration International Corp. control the rest of the shares in equal proportions.
Almendras said RP Energy and SBMA officials have been into discussions to up the revenue take of SBMA from the project, thus, there shall be no more further reason to oppose the project.
Completion of the RP Energy Coal Power Plant in Subic is expected to be around 2015, in time for the increased demand for power supply from the Luzon grid in the face of increasing population and development.
