‘Be Careful With My Heart’ extended

MANILA, Philippines – Kapamilya actress Jodi Sta. Maria admitted that her life has totally changed because of the hit daytime series “Be Careful With My Heart,” where she plays a lead role for the first time.
“Super. Sobrang laking pagbabago talaga,” Sta. Maria said in an interview on “Kris TV” hosted by Kris Aquino.
The actress admitted that she and the rest of the show’s cast and production team never imagined that “Be Careful With My Heart” will be a huge hit.
“Hindi talaga namin ini-expect kasi noong nagsimula ‘yung show, parang experimental lang siya. Ultimo ‘yung love team namin ni Papa Chen. So ‘yun, pinaniwalaan lang namin talaga ‘yung konsepto,” she said of her on-screen partner on the series, Richard Yap.
Because of the show’s success, “Be Careful With My Heart” has been extended up to February 2013, according to Sta. Maria.
In “Be Careful With My Heart,” Sta. Maria plays the role of Maya, a family maid attending to the children of Yap’s character, a rich widower.
Wants to be a doctor
While her showbiz dreams are slowly coming true, Sta. Maria said she is still hoping to become a doctor someday.
“Yes, nandoon pa rin siya. Hindi pa rin ako naggi-give up doon sa pangarap ko na ‘yon,” she said.
“Wala naman sa edad ‘yung pag-aaral, hindi ba? Hanggang kaya ko. Hindi ba hanggang may buhay may pag-asa? So nandoon pa rin ako, hindi ko pa din siya binibitiwan.”
Aside from her hit daytime soap “Be Careful With My Heart,” Sta. Maria is also busy with her restaurant business.

Discrimination a challenge in HIV prevention: official

BEIJING — An official from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that social discrimination against HIV carriers may be even more dangerous than the virus itself.
Discrimination has caused people with risky behavior to become reluctant to be tested for HIV, posing a challenge for HIV control and prevention efforts, Wu Zunyou, director of the CDC HIV/AIDS prevention and control center, was quoted as saying in the Thursday edition of the China Youth Daily.
According to an earlier report jointly produced by the Ministry of Health, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS and the World Health Organization, there were about 780,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China as of the end of September last year, with infections among the student population rising.
Sexual relations are the main source of the infections, accounting for 63.9 percent of the total number of cases, Wu said, adding that the number of HIV-positive gay males also increased.
Infections transmitted via homosexual behavior accounted for 13 percent of the total cases in the first nine months of 2011, an increase from 2.5 percent in 2006, Wu said.
Sexually transmitted HIV cases among homosexual men are spreading more quickly in cities with more dense populations, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, Wu said.
Wu said a lack of awareness regarding HIV/AIDS risks, as well as a failure to refrain from engaging in risky sexual activity, have made gay males more suspectible to infection.
Wu called on suspected patients to seek out HIV testing as soon as possible, as an early diagnosis and treatment can reduce mortality and stop the disease from spreading.
However, some patients are reluctant to do so for fear that they may be discriminated against by others, Wu said.
Wu said authorities have made efforts to eliminate discrimination by promoting public awareness of the disease, adding that several groups have volunteered to provide advice, guidance and intervention for high-risk people.
Wu said the government is working to provide free anti-viral treatment for infected people.

Death toll on meningitis climbs to 14 in U.S.

WASHINGTON — At least 14 Americans have been killed, 156 others sickened in a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated drug, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Thursday.
The outbreak has claimed lives in six states — Tennessee, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Indiana, the CDC said in its latest update. Tennessee remained the hardest-hit state with 49 cases; Michigan added 11 cases and was at 39 on Thursday, with Virginia adding three to reach 30 and Indiana six to reach 21.

Cebu guv forgoes trip for Pedro Calungsod canonization

CEBU CITY — Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is forgoing her wish to attend the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod in Rome on October 21.
There is a hold-departure order (HDO) against the governor over graft charges.
”I have a hold-departure order, though I could ask for a leave of course, but I decided to stay,” Garcia said.
Garcia is facing charges before the Sandiganbayan over the purchase of a partly submerged property in Naga City in southern Cebu, the basis for the HDO.
While she won’t be witnessing Calungsod’s canonization rites, the governor will get to attend “a special day for my first-born.”
Her eldest son Paolo’s birthday falls on Oct. 21, the scheduled canonization of Calungsod.
But the governor said she will be joining Cebuanos attending the canonization “in spirit.”
”Certainly I am one with our brothers and sisters who are fortunate enough to leave and be in Rome,” she said.
Garcia said the canonization of a Visayan Saint, San Pedro “Calungsod, is a great blessing for the Province of Cebu.
Ginatilan town in southern Cebu will be holding a parallel celebration on October 21.
It is believed that the soon-to-be saint is from Ginatilan, where the Calungsod clan hails from. (PNA)

Rep. Osmeña bares plan for ‘freeway’ link to southern Cebu

CEBU CITY — Representative Tomas Osmeña has bared a plan to expand the S. Osmena Road near Cebu City’s port area to an eight-lane road to provide a wider service route to the pier and serve as a “freeway” to southern parts of Cebu province.
Osmena (Cebu City, south district) said the project has an allocation of P150-million in the 2012 national budget and will be bidded out before the year ends.
S. Osmena Road, which was named after his father, the late senator Sergio “Serging” Osmena Jr., is a national road and its expansion will be undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Osmena said there are also plans to build two center road tunnels along the entire stretch of S. Osmena Road from the Mahiga Creek near the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) building to the South Coastal Road tunnel near Plaza Independencia.
But separate funding for this still has to be identified, he said.
The tunnels will occupy two middle lanes of the planned eight-lane S. Osmena road, while the three outer lanes will be used as a freeway, Osmena said.
”The purpose of having the tunnel is to have non-stop traffic where vehicles don’t have to stop when you reach the intersections,” said Osmena who is vice chairman of the House committee on appropriations.
As proposed, the first road tunnel will be built at the intersection of S. Osmena Road and Juan Luna Street near Radisson Blu Hotel.
The second tunnel will be in a portion of S. Osmena Road near pier 4.
S. Osmena Road connects to the South Coastal Road that links Cebu City and Talisay City, where a 300-hectare reclamation project was undertaken during Osmena’s term as Cebu City mayor, now named the South Road Properties.
Linking the roads farther south would make travel to the outlying towns of Cebu’s 1st district faster and more accessible.
Earlier, Osmena said he diverted some P400 million intended for infrastructure projects in Cebu City’s south district to the expansion of the Cebu South Road, a project of Rep. Eduardo Gullas of Cebu’s 1st district.
About P1.25 billion is needed for the South Road expansion, of which Gullas said he only had P250 million available from his pork barrel. (PNA)

3 die, 2 missing in Batangas flash flood

MANILA — Three persons died while two others were reported missing in a flash flood incident in Batangas, the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday.
NDRRMC identified the dead as Emeliana Lontoc, Menchie Degayeta, and Nelia Gweco while Jona Driz and Efren Lontoc are still missing.
Based on investigations, NDRRMC said around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (October 10), an owner type jeepney carrying six passengers was crossing a river along Barangay Nagtalungtong, Lobo,Batangas when a strong current swept the vehicle.
One of the passengers identified as Jeurtrudes Indecio was rescued in the incident.
The disaster agency added that search and rescue operation is ongoing for the missing victims. (PNA)

Strong earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A strong earthquake jolted eastern Indonesia on Friday, sending panicked people running out of their houses and buildings, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency said there was no danger of a tsunami, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was a “very small possibility” for a tsunami near the epicenter.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake measured magnitude 6.7 and was centered 108 kilometers (67 miles) north of Dobo on Aru island chain of the provincial capital of Maluku, at a depth of 24 kilometers (15 miles).
Victor Siahaya, a resident in Dobo, a closest village to the epicenter said that strong earthquake shook everything at his house, forcing him and his family run.
“It was so strong… many people screaming while running in panic,” Siahaya said, “But I don’t see any damage in my neighborhood.”

Baguio bus accident injures 12

AT LEAST 12 people were hurt in a road accident involving a bus passenger in Baguio City on Thursday afternoon, the state disaster agency said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the Amianan bus driven by Joselito Zuniega crashed on Marcos Highway’s Kilometer 4.
Twelve of the 19 passengers on board were injured including Rosita Acangan; Mary Ann Molina; Jenny Chapyosen, 12; John Eric Pascua, 12; Mark Anthony Fang, 16; Jushua Mallari, 17; Ma. Demoiselle Orpiano, 18; Jomar Mendoza, 21; Analisa Lacambra, 31; Milca Orpiano, 41; Carolina Dapnisan, 43; and Rosita Labutan, 50.
The injured passengers, who were mostly residents of Pangasinan, Benget, and Baguio City, were given medical attention at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.
Thursday’s Baguio road mishap is the third vehicular accident that the NDRRMC has reported in three weeks. On October 2, a collision between a passenger jeep and a 14-wheeler truck in San Isidro, Ilocos Norte killed 10 people and injured four others.
