Mutya bets tapped to promote Pampanga’s tourism industry

CLARK FREEPORT – The candidates of this year’s Mutya ning Kapampangan have been tapped to promote Pampanga’s tourism sites, said Board Member Olga Frances “Fritzie” David-Dizon, pageant chairperson.
“It’s the start of great things when both the private and public work together for the common good and to push for the tourism industry in Pampanga,” said David-Dizon.
Philippines’ AirAsia CEO Marianne Hontiveros, in a statement, said they will tap the major winners of the Mutya Ning Kapampangan 2012 for the promotion of the tourism destinations and “the genuine Kapampangan beauty.”
“AirAsia wants to work on a long term basis with Governor Lilia Pineda and her people. We want the ‘Mutyas’ to help us promote Clark and Pampanga,” said Hontiveros during the opening of the AirAsia café at Clark International Airport (CIA).
AirAsia thanked David-Dizon when she took 20 of the 22 candidates to the newly-opened AirAsia café who danced to tune of “Gangnam style.”
Pineda, in a phone interview, said the “old churches in Pampanga are the premiere destinations” that could attract local and international tourists. She cited the 440-years-old St. Augustine Parish in their hometown of Lubao as one of them.
Senior Board Member Cris Garbo, for his part, said he had filed an ordinance “institutionalizing” the five major winners of the annual pageant “as ambassadors of goodwill” who will join the governor and other officials in welcoming visitors and help promote the province’s products and destinations.
The pre-pageant is on December 7 at 4 p.m. in SM City Clark, Angeles City. The coronation night is on December 10 at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in the City of San Fernando. (PR)

Festival dances highlight Pampanga Day opening

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Pampanga Provincial Government launched on Thursday its opening of the 441st Aldo Ning Kapampangan by bringing together the various festival dances in the province in one celebration of local history.
Dubbed as “Pamamupul” (Harvest) Festival, the event featured dances from Pampanga’s rich traditional ritual celebrations of Sasmuan’s Kuraldal to the local government-invented dance celebrations of recent times.
Governor Lilia Pineda said the event aimed at providing people with the opportunity to see festival dances in one celebration as part of the overall celebration of the province’s founding anniversary.
Provincial Tourism officer Arwin Lingat said the celebration was a “harvest” of the rich festival celebrations of the province, which are only staged once a year.
“People will now have a unique opportunity to see these dance celebrations in one event and they would no longer have to wait for almost a year just to see them,” Lingat said.
Lingat said this is first time the Provincial Government has brought together all festival traditions in the province under one celebration.
Various towns trooped to the Pampanga Provincial Capitol staging their signature festival dances, which include Candaba (Ibon-Ebun Festival), Mabalacat (Caragan Festival), Floridablanca (San Jose Festival), Lubao (Sampaguita Festival), Magalang (Kamaru Festival), Mexico (San Nicolas Festival), Porac (Binulo Festival), Angeles City (Bagius Festival), San Simon (Sun-See-Moon Festival), Bacolor (Makatapak Festival), Arayat (Manga Festival), Sta. Rita (Duman Festival), and Sasmuan (Kuraldal).
Of the said celebrations, Kuraldal is considered as the oldest with the rest as recent inventions for tourism attractions.
Today, the second day of the celebrations will feature the “Aldo Ning Mangabiayan and OFW” at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, simultaneous with the “Agro, Industrial, Trade, Food, Cultural, Arts and Crafts Fair” at the trade hall of SM City Pampanga.
The main highlights of the celebrations are the Mutya Ning Kapampangan Pre-Pageant (SM City Clark) and Coronation Night (Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center) on December 7 and 10, respectively, and the Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awards on December 11.

Mexico village chief, son shot

MEXICO, Pampanga – A village chief from Mexico town was killed, while his son was seriously injured, when gunmen aboard a motorcycle shot them at the vicinity of Barangay Parian near the Poblacion at 11 a.m. Thursday.
San Miguel village chief Jose Gonzales, 56, and his son, Jayson, a Youth Council official, were on their way home after attending the thanksgiving mass during the opening rites of the 441st Pampanga Day celebrations when they were attacked by the suspects.
The elder Gonzales died before he reached Mexico Community Hospital, while his son, Jason, survived and was rushed to a hospital in the City of San Fernando for treatment.
Sources, who asked not to be named, said the younger Gonzales was reportedly able to recognize one of the suspects as the bodyguard of a political figure whom his father had an altercation with three months ago.
But Senior Superintendent R’Win Pagkalinawan, Pampanga police provincial director, said Mexico police operatives are still conducting a thorough investigation on the incident to confirm reports.
Pagkalinawan also ordered the Mexico Police to conduct a manhunt operation for the immediate arrest of the killers.

Task force Gonzales formed

CAMP OLIVAS – Police created Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Gonzales” on Friday to investigate and identify the gunmen responsible in the killing of Jose Gonzales, village chief of Barangay San Miguel, Mexico, Pampanga.
Gonzales was shot dead while his son Jayson Gonzales wounded when armed men riding a motorcycle assaulted them at around 11 am on Thursday. The victims were on their way to Barangay Poblacion, Mexico town on board a Barangay service vehicle.
The elder Gonzales was declared dead on arrival at the Mexico Community Hospital while his son was transferred to another hospital in the City of San Fernando for treatment.
The task group will be headed by Senior Superintendent Nilo Talino, deputy regional director for operations.
Task Group “Gonzales” will be composed of Philippine National Police personnel from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, Crime Laboratory Office, Regional Intelligence Group and Pampanga Police.
Meanwhile, Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. (third district) condemned the killing of the village chief.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms this unconscionable violence in Mexico that claimed that life of a barangay leader and cause serious injury to his son,” Rep. Gonzales said on Thursday.

Fernandina lass crowned ‘Mutya ning Sinukwan’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A young and talented lass from this city was crowned as the 2012 “Mutya ning Sinukwan” during the coronation night Thursday at Robinsons Starmills.
Korina Christiene Reyes was chosen by the board of judges among 10 other candidates from Sasmuan, Lubao, Sta. Rita, Angeles City, Mexico, Apalit, Floridablanca, Mabalacat City and City of San Fernando.
The pageant is part of the ongoing Sinukwan Festival which kicked-off last December 1 and will culminate today, December 8, with street dancing free interpretation tilt and grand fireworks display.
“I am very happy to be crowned Mutya ng Sinukwan. I vow to carry on the cause of the festival like the cultural and heritage spirit. Every candidate in the pageant is equally beautiful and talented and we are all winners,” Reyes said.
Reyes’ court is composed of Shanen Valencia of Lubao, Mutya Mahinhin; Rollie Anne Sedigo of Sasmuan, Mutya Matimtiman; and Mary Rose Antonio of Mabalacat City, Mutya Malagu.
The other candidates who vied for the crown were Janeeh Marie Miranda, Sta. Rita; Crystal Hilton, Angeles City; Ghia Larela Lacsa, Mexico; Angie Castro, Apalit; Jennah Rizza Banagan and Mary Anne Lalic, both from Floridablanca; and Gel Dacion, City of San Fernando.

Hundreds visit Capitol trade fair

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Hundreds of mallgoers have been flocking to the “Agro, Industrial, Trade, Food, Cultural, Arts and Crafts Fair” at the SM City Pampanga Trade Hall, which started over the weekend and will be open to the public until Monday.
Governor Lilia Pineda along with Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada, board members Trina Dizon, Monina Laus and Fritzie David-Dizon led the opening of the fair with dozens of mallgoers in attendance.
The event is among the highlights of the week-long activities of the 441st “Aldo Ning Kapampangan” (Pampanga Day) celebrations.
Mamerto Gatus of the Provincial Cooperative and Entrepreneurial Development Office (PCEDO) said the event features some 60 stalls of local industries, crafts and agri-based entrepreneurs from different towns in the province.
“We have a mix group of stalls here from local crafts and industries of various towns brought by their local government units. We also have micro and home-based entrepreneurs coming in to showcase their products,” Gatus said.
Gatus added that Pineda wanted to generate support for local industries and promote these on a provincial and regional level through the support of non-government partners like SM City Pampanga.
Some of the crafts on sale are woodcrafts, water lily shoes, and metal works. There are also stalls offering food and pastries as well as home cooked meals.
Among the favorite stalls include the showroom of furniture from Gugua’s Betis district; the pottery demonstration of Sto. Tomas; the iron and glass products of Apalit; the duman stall of Sta. Rita; and the Sampaguita stall of Lubao.
SM City Pampanga mall manager Lana Erroba said that the mall is one with the province in promoting local industries and they are looking forward to hosting the event next year.

Traditional Japanese dance master to perform in Angeles

ANGELES CITY – Master Senju Einojo, a highly respected keeper of tradition and instructor of Nihon Buyo, the oldest and most traditional form of Japanese theatrical dance, will be sharing his knowledge to the Kapampangans on December 16, Sunday at 5 p.m.
The free performance, which is open to the public, features Nippon Buyo/Nihon Buyo, a “traditional Japanese performing art, a mixture of dance and pantomime, which emerged in the early Edo period (early 17th century) from earlier traditions.”
According to his website, Einojo has started teaching Classical Japanese Dancing in 1993. In 1995, he became the president of the Nara Classical Japanese Dance Association.
In 1999, he succeeded the second head of Senju School of Dance from Wakanojo Senju. In the same year, he formed a Classical Japanese Dance Group, Senju Buyodan.
From April 2002, he starts teaching Classical Japanese Dance at Osaka University of Health and Sports Science.
His talent in Classical Japanese Dance has been recognized nationally since his early childhood. He has won a Master Award twice at a National Contest in Classical Japanese Dancing when he was young, the website added.
The Museo Ning Kapampangan is urging dance lovers and culture enthusiasts to witness the event which will be open to the public on a first come first serve basis.

Pampanga donates caskets for ‘Pablo’ victims

STO. TOMAS – The Provincial Government of Pampanga and the Pampanga Mayors League in cooperation with the Municipality of Sto. Tomas have donated some 350 caskets for those who perished in southern Mindanao during the onslaught of Typhoon “Pablo.”
Officials of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 332 people were killed and 379 were missing after Pablo triggered landslides and floods along the coast and in farming and mining towns inland — like Compostela Valley and New Bataan — in the southern Mindanao region.
The NDRRMC said in reports that the death toll could rise further, with local government officials reporting higher numbers of missing and dead.
Sto. Tomas Mayor Joselito Naguit told Sun.Star Pampanga that as of Friday night, an additional 240 caskets were taken to the Villamor Air Base for shipment to Mindanao. On Thursday, 110 coffins have already been transported by boat to the affected areas, he added.
“The donation is a concerted effort of Capitol, the PML and the Municipality of Sto. Tomas which supplies 70 percent of the casket requirements of the country. Actually, Governor Lilia Pineda wanted us to donate at least 500 of these caskets which are not ordinary. But our casket makers here do not have such stocks since they only have about 30 pieces each, but they are working on them now in the event a higher need arises,” he said.
Naguit said that Sto. Tomas has always responded to such emergency situations.
“Last year, we shipped approximately the same number of caskets to CDO [Cagayan de Oro] and then during the time of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when massive landslides occurred in Baguio City. Though we can measure up to such needs, we hope and pray that the death toll in Mindanao will no longer rise,” the mayor said.

Sinukwan Festival: Kapampangans’ Pride

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Sinukwan Festival is indeed the pride of Kapampangans, especially with its cultural and heritage spirit.
“This festival must be sustained and boosted not only for Kapampangans but for all Filipinos to see,” said lawyer Apolinario Anota Jr., trustee and executive director of Nayong Filipino.
Anota graced the grand parade and street dancing competition of Sinukwan Festival dubbed “Kabalen Mekeni! Kulturang Kapampangan Pagsayan, Panandaman…” at the Robinsons Starmills in this city.
“It is actually my first time to witness the Sinukwan Festival, but judging from the performances of the participants, we should really take pride because it is a class of its own,” he added.
Fr. Resty Lumanlan, president of the Foundation for Lingap Kapampangan Inc. (FLKI), for his part said the spirit of Sinukwan – dubbed the mother of all festivals in Pampanga – will continue through the kind hearts of the foundation’s partners.
“For the past 15 years the FLKI, despite the lack of funds, has sustained the Sinukwan Festival through our partnership with the City Government of San Fernando and Robinsons Land among others. We are certain that the spirit of the Sinukwan Festival, with its strong call for unity, will live on,” said Lumanlan.
This year’s festival street dancing tilt featured the San Francisco Elementary School from Magalang and the City of San Fernando’s Baliti Integrated School and San Jose Panlumacan School in the Level 1 or elementary category.
In the Level 2 category or secondary and tertiary level, the competitors included Floridablanca’s Ka Tribu Mag-Indi, San Fernando City College, Bacolor’s San Isidro High School with their Pamamupul Festival, San Fernando West Integrated School, Lubao’s Sampaguita Festival, Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University’s Makatapak Festival, Angeles City National Trade School, San Simon’s Sta. Monica Aerobics Club, and featured the first time performance of the Tarlac National High School.

Barangay chairman slain, SK son wounded in Pampanga ambush

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Dec. 6 — A barangay chairman was killed and his son wounded when fired at close range by armed men on board a motorcycle along a provincial road in Barangay Poblacion, Mexico town at about 11:00 a.m. Thursday.

Senior Supt. R’Win Pagkalinawan, Pampanga police provincial director, identified the fatality as village chief Jose Gonzales, 56, of Barangay San Miguel, Mexico town.

The victim’s son identified as Jayson Gonzales, a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) leader, was wounded.

Pagkalinawan said a sketchy report from the Mexico police said the victims were on board a barangay patrol vehicle heading towards Barangay Poblacion when the suspects on board a motorcycle suddenly appeared and shot them at close range.

The elder Gonzales was declared dead by Dr. Claro Mendoza on arrival at the Mexico Community Hospital due to severe gunshots in the body.

Pagkalinawan said the victim’s son was transferred to a hospital in the City of San Fernando for medical treatment.

The suspects fled towards to an unknown direction after the incident, he said, adding that motive behind the killing is not yet known.

Pagkalinawan ordered the Mexico police to conduct a dragnet operation for the arrest of the killers. (PNA)
