NGCP to expand metering services in 2013

MEXICO, Pampanga — The National Grid Corpo0ration of the Philippines (NGCP) is set to expand its metering services in 2013.
Lawyer Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson and adviser for external affairs, said the recent certification of the transmission firm as the metering services provider for the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market has “trained the spotlight onto one of the major services performed by the company.”
Alabanza, during the Power 101 seminar for mediamen at Mexico Substation on Thursday, also said the expansion of the metering services is consistent with NGCP’s move to transition toward the eventual adoption of the Smart Grid in the country that allows not only to record our customers’ energy consumption, but to communicate this data to facilitate automated and remote meter reading, remote connection and disconnection of the energy supply to the end-user, and close monitoring of the energy supply.
She told Sun.star Pampanga that the creation of 32 new metering points in 2013 is in anticipation not only of the direct connection of new power customers but also of power generators that are currently being planned and across the country.
“For Luzon, NGCP has included in its capital expenditures program the creation of 15 metering points to complement our three-year program for the installation of alternate meters at metering points where the WESM already operates,” shared Perez-Alabanza, adding the expansion will include the improvement of meters, voltage and current transformers which are “due for retirement.”
“This expansion, maintenance and upgrading program is quite extensive and is expected to further improve not only the reach but the quality and reliability of our existing metering services to our customers,” concluded Perez-Alabanza.

Legarda joins call to save sea turtles

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Senator Loren Legarda has joined the call to save the Philippine Marine Turtles or “Pawikan” at the 2012 Pawikan Festival held at the Pawikan Conservation Center in Morong, Bataan.

Legarda, speaker at the event, remarked that the Pawikan is one of the oldest species that have survived to this day, and are among those that live the longest.
“Pawikans are majestic creatures found throughout the country. However, because of poaching, theft of their eggs for commercial purposes, and destruction of their habitat, they are in danger of becoming extinct,” she said.

“There is no denying that we have become the biggest threat to their existence and to the existence of many other species of animals,” she added.

Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change and United Nations Regional Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific, said the destruction of marine habitats means great losses for many sources of livelihood, including tourism, as well as depletion of food supply.

“I laud the local government of Bataan for their initiatives to protect, conserve, and rehabilitate the Pawikan population. Future generations will be thankful for the concerted action they have achieved,” she said.

The senator also urged the people of Bataan to spread their advocacy to other communities in the country to stop those who are plundering the seas for their own gain.

“The environment is threatened by the times, by the pressures of modern society, by our very species. But let this be a challenge to harness science and involve our citizens. Let us take that one vital step forward for a safe and green environment for all,” Legarda said.

City honors ‘Supremo’ with new monument

THE City Government of San Fernando led by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez and multi-sectoral groups commemorated Friday the 149th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio by unveiling its new monument at Heroes Park.
The composite bronze monument was crafted by Ten Outstanding Young Men awardee Sajid Imao, the son of a national artist.
According to Rodriguez, the new version that replaced the previous monument is more “representative of the character, virtues and values” of Bonifacio as evidenced by its details, including expression and proportion.
“We were not satisfied with the previous monument and statue, so we commissioned artist Sajid Imao for this new version. This one is more accurate as to interpretation and details like hike his scabbard, waist pistol and other features,” Rodriguez said.
He told Sun.Star Pampanga that the better, eye-catching monument depicts the real person of Bonifacio, the “Supremo.”
“Hindi siya kawawa unlike what was depicted before. Supremo Andres Bonifacio is an intellectual with an incomparable love for country, liberty and quality. With this better version of the monument, we are able to present now to the public the true picture of Bonifacio,” Rodriguez said.
He said the monument, which is born from continuous research of city officials and historians, will be a lasting reminder to younger and future generations of the life, struggles and sacrifices of Bonifacio in liberating Filipinos from bondage.
The Supremo’s descendant, 32-year-old Police Senior Inspector May Andrea Bonifacio, who is currently posted at the Camp Olivas Crime Laboratory, agreed and said: “Andres Bonifacio was not only a revolutionary but an intellectual who loved the country so much. He called for unity during his time and despite of what they did to him, he remained humble and steadfast. I, together with the rest of his descendants hope that he will not be forgotten by the generations of Filipinos to come.”
