Pampanga gov’t vows support to apparel shop

 

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Governor Lilia G. Pineda on Friday led the grand opening of UNIQLO, a leading Japanese clothes retailer at SM City Pampanga, as she vowed to support the clothing company in the province.

The branch at the mall is UNIQLO’s fourth in the country, according to Chief Operating Officer (COO) Katsumi Kubota. He added that the clothing line currently has 1,200 stores in 13 countries.

Pineda, in a brief message, said, “I assure you that the provincial government will give its full support.”
The governor accompanied by Second District Board Member Frances Olga David-Dizon led the cutting of ribbon of UNIQLO along with Kubota and SM Pampanga Mall Manager Lana Eroba.

At exactly 9 a.m. Friday, shoppers flocked in front of UNIQLO store to shop for the trendiest clothing that the global store could offer.
Kubota said the Japan-based top officials of the Uniqlo Co., LTD approved the branching out in Pampanga among all provinces in the country after he explained its vibrant economy and “different” purchasing power of its some 2 million residents.

Pampanga is considered the economic and business hub of the region with seven provinces.
Earlier, Pineda stressed that the growing economy in Pampanga is “most evident” with the SM’s three malls, one of them regarded as the largest shopping mall in Central Luzon, along with the shopping centers of other prominent firms operating in the province.

Kubota said UNIQLO, which has some global sales of 928 billion yen (about P372 billion) in 2012, is offering “Life Wear” products.

Young engineers to join international marathon

CLARK FREEPORT—At least 10 teams from top engineering schools in the country are set to join the Asian leg of the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon in Malaysia in July.

The teams were presented to the media by top officials from Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation on Friday at the Clark Speedway.
Pioneering teams include students from the Mapua Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas and Don Bosco Technical College.

Other schools representing the country in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Asia are De La Salle University–Manila, Technological Institute of the Philippines–Quezon City and Manila, University of San Carlos, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines–Manila.

The eco-marathon is one of the regional precursors to the global eco-marathon event—an annual competition developed by Shell to encourage young student engineers all over the world to design, build and test energy-efficient vehicles.

The Shell Eco-marathon categorizes entries in the prototype and urban concept categories, where a variety of energy sources such as gasoline, diesel, bio-fuels, gas to liquids (GTL), electric battery, and many other innovative methods in smarter mobility can be used.

Participants are made to showcase their knowledge and skills in computer-aided vehicle and engine design, electronics, mechanical construction and driving, as they aim to provide positive contributions toward safe and fuel-efficient land transportation.

This year’s race will be held on July 4-7, 2013 at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
During the media presentation, representatives from each school made an actual test drive of their entries.

Mapua, one of the teams that made a good showing in earlier editions of Shell Eco-marathon Asia, is expected to lead the chances for the Philippine contingent to achieve record-breaking success this year.

The team’s entries for 2013, dubbed “Agila” and “Haribon” in the prototype and urban concept categories respectively, boast of improved design and extremely light materials. The team is also setting a fuel consumption target of at least 1,000 kilometers per liter—a big jump from their past run performances at Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

Candaba folks hit plan to scrap ‘Ibon-Ebon’

CANDABA, Pampanga–Local folks here were surprised with the recent pronouncement of incoming town mayor Rene Maglanque about his plan to abolish the celebration of Ibon-Ebon Festival.

The residents said that although the festival may not be able to help boost the local economy, it uplifts the cooperation and unity among the participating groups from all the villages in the town.

“The decision to shelve the Ibon-Ebon festival should not be drastic. Studies should be made first on what should be done according to their priorities,” said Loida Batas, a resident here.

Batas said that from a “never heard municipality,” Candaba was placed in the world map in terms of conservation and protection of environment which was bolstered by the Ibon-Ebon celebration.

One of the more colorful events in Pampanga, the Ibon Ebon Festival (literally means “bird- egg”) features the municipality of Candaba as the home of thousands of migratory birds flying in from different parts of the globe, and at the same time showcases its growing duck-egg industry.
Ibon-Ebon festival, which brought the name of Candaba to fame not only in the province but in the whole country, was a brain-child of outgoing mayor Jerry Pelayo.

Instead of the Ibon-Ebon Festival, Maglanque said he is planning to create another festival that would target the main product of Candaba which would make the festivity as marketing event and arm of the town in the promotion of its industry and tourists attraction at the same time.
Maglanque said he will definitely cut the budget intended for the festival from P5 million to P1 million and the savings will go to the education sector.

He expressed belief that the budget allocated for only few days of Ibon-Ebon celebration is too big, which according to him is best if given to indigent students who wanted to finish their studies.

Maglanque said his focus is more on the education of the indigent children who are dreaming to alleviate poverty that their families suffer from.
However, the incoming mayor clarified that this plan is still subject to consultation with the local officials, residents and other stakeholders.
