Groups to plant hardwood trees in Morong, Bataan

DINALUPIHAN, Bataan–Fifty hectares in the upland area of Morong town will be planted with hardwood trees.
The reforestation project in Sitio Kanawan, an Aeta inhabited upland territory, will be undertaken by oil company PTT Philippines, an environmental group Mga Bayani Ng Kalikasan, and other concerned civic and environment groups.
Felicito “Tong” Payumo, congressional candidate in Bataan first district and a known environmental advocate, initiated the greening project. He is the adviser of Mga Bayani Ng Kalikasan.
PTT Philippines will provide the seedlings of lawaan, apitong, narra, and other hardwood species.
The Aeta Magbukun Tribe will manage the nursery of the seedlings to be planted.
About 116 Aeta families will directly benefit in the project.
Last month, in a symposium on the biodiversity and culture held in Sinagtala Resort in Orani town, Payumo asked the young generation to help in the preservation of the Bataan National Park (BNP).
He said that the youth and the future generation should participate in the effort to preserve the Bataan Park, which is the source of potable water of surrounding municipalities.
Large portion of the forested area of Morong is part of BNP.
Payumo recently abdicated his position as Bases Conversion Development Authority chairman and now running in the post he already held for three consecutive terms.

Subic Freeport workers count nears 90,000

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT– The total number of workforce inside this Freeport has neared the 90,000 mark at the end of 2012.
This was announced by Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman Roberto Garcia, stating that the agency needs to be more aggressive in enticing more investors.
“The current number of employees which is 89,372 has kept the Freeport Zone afloat despite the crises that affected the world. We need to strengthen that number to ensure sustained growth in our country’s economy,” Garcia said.
The services sector has the most number of workers with a total of 38,459 or 43.16 percent.
It was followed by the shipbuilding or maritime industry with 27,310 or 30.65 percent; manufacturing–15,183 or 17.04 percent; construction–7,614 or 8.54 percent; and caretakers who make up 1 percent of the workforce.
Olongapo City has the most number of residents employed inside the Freeport at 34,092 followed by Zambales–19,025; Bataan–10,963; Metro Manila– 4,399; Pampanga–3,190; and Tarlac–2,106.
“We do hope we can add more workers, as this would mean additional employment and less unemployed Filipinos in the country. As much as possible, we want them to work in their mother land and use their expertise to develop our country,” Garcia said. ● (PIA 3)

Mall employees share gifts to special kids

PORAC, Pampanga–Top officials of big shopping malls in Pampanga have joined together to raise funds used to provide gifts to children with special needs here.
SM Supermalls officials led by Regional Operations Manager Rheybie Nipas brought food and gifts to at least 38 children with special needs housed at the Holy Trinity Special Education Foundation Inc., based in Barangay Manibaug Paralaya in this town.
Nipas said mall managers and administration officers allotted a portion of their Christmas bonuses to help those children.
Among the managers who joined the gift giving include SM City Clark (SMCC) Assistant Mall Manager Ana Datu, SM City Pampanga (SMCP) Assistant Mall Manager Lana Eroba and SM City San Fernando Downtown (SMCSF) Assistant Mall Manager Junias Eusebio.
Administration officials from Apalit Save More, SMCC, SMCP and SMCSF also joined the gift giving.
Nipas said SM mall employees collected a total of P26,000 which were used to buy food and gifts to the children.
In turn, the children rendered song and dance performances to the mall employees as their way of thanking them.
Holy Trinity Special Education Foundation Inc., Director Sister May Cano said the foundation survives through donation.
So far, Cano said they take care of nearly 40 children, six of them were hearing impaired.
The foundation is registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission and is recognized by the Department of Social and Welfare Development. ●

Bataan police score big in anti-illegal drugs drive

PILAR, Bataan–Local police authorities scored big in its intensified anti-illegal drug campaign following the arrest of eight suspected drug pushers in buy-bust operations in the past two days.
Police Senior Inspector Dennis Orbista, Pilar police chief, said they conducted six anti-drug buy-bust operations for two days that resulted in the confiscation of 15 sachets of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu and one sachet of dried marijuana leaves with street value estimated at P50,000 from eight suspected drug pushers.
The confiscated items were all brought to the Bataan police crime laboratory in Balanga City.
The suspects, on the other hand, were brought for inquest on Thursday at the Bataan Prosecutors’ Office for charges of Violation of Section 5 and 11 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. They were committed at the Bataan District Jail in Balanga City.
“We will continue with our drug operations with full support from Mayor Carlos Pizarro, Jr. until all streets of Pilar town are free of the drug menace,” Orbista said. ● (PNA)

PHL Center in New York City displays San Fernando lanterns

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The current window display of the Philippine Center located in the heart of Manhattan in New York City highlights Philippine craftsmanship through the use of seasonal handcrafted décor, such as the renowned San Fernando lantern, and the diversity of Philippine tourism attractions.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the strategically located two-panel window display area of the Center features Christmas decorations manufactured by Philippine companies and provided by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM). The holiday decorations feature ornaments, such as Christmas balls and stars made of indigenous materials like raffia and abaca. The famous San Fernando Pampanga parols likewise add vibrant color and light to the display.
The other panel which can be easily viewed at street-level consists of a video wall where different “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” videos from the Philippine Department of Tourism are streamed non-stop daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Both displays have been attracting admirers during the busy holiday season in New York.

1 killed, another wounded in Bulacan shooting

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A special child died while another was injured after a backhoe operator shot them in Marilao, Bulacan recently.
Police identified the fatality as Katrina Ellane Olino, 14, of 4 Daang Bakal, Barangay Saog, Marilao, Bulacan while the injured was Maria Judith Guinto, 30, of the same address.
The suspect was identified as Jonathan Amasan, 33, single, a native of Negros Occidental and a resident of Summer Set Apartment, Mahabang Parang, Sta Maria, Bulacan.
According to police investigation, before the incident, Amasan had a heated argument with the parents of the injured victim, Lauro and Rosario Guinto, about his affair with Maria Judith.
Then, suddenly, Amasan shot the victims hitting the special child on the chest and back part of the body while Maria Judith sustained injuries on her left arm and right leg.
Both victims were rushed to the hospital by relatives but the child was pronounced dead on arrival. Maria Judith was still recuperating in the same hospital.
Amasan was later arrested by responding policemen.
Police said the suspect will be charged with murder and frustrated murder.
The suspect is now under the custody of the Marilao Police office and he will be also charged with illegal possession of firearms, police said. ●

Ex-cop killed in gunfight vs. policeman

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A former member of the Manila Police District was killed after he traded shots with a policeman on New Year’s Day in Barangay Duhat, Bocaue, Bulacan.
In his report to Police Regional Office 3 director Chief Supt. Edgardo T. Ladao, Bulacan police director Senior Supt. Joel Orduna identified the fatality as Rommel Fortuno, 40, of Roxabago, Tondo, Manila.
The suspect identified as PO2 Vergilio Manuzon, 30, married, a member of Bulacan PNP-Provincial Public Safety Company and presently residing at No. 30 Gil Buena Street, Bocaue, immediately surrendered to authorities and is now under the custody of the Bocaue police.
Prior to the shooting, the victim figured in a heated argument with his former girlfriend identified as Cindy Laguardia, 21. The incident took place at the compound of Laguardia’s residence in Barangay Duhat at around 10:30 a.m.
While confronting his former girlfriend, the victim pulled out his cal. 45 pistol and poked it at Laguardia and her boyfriend identified as Alvin Bautista, 25 of Barangay Nagbalon, Marilao, Bulacan.
Police said the victim also pointed his gun to everyone at the compound including two young boys who were identified as the siblings of Manuzon.
Upon learning of the incident, Manuzon rushed to the scene and tried to pacify Fortuno by introducing himself as a police officer.
But the victim ignored Manuzon and instead boarded his black-red Yamaha Mio Sporty motorcycle without a plate number. But before leaving the place, the victim shot the responding policeman.
Manuzon retaliated, hitting the victim in the different parts of his body. Though wounded, Fortuno tried to escape aboard his motorcycle while shooting at Manuzon until he rammed a fence and fell.
Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) team from the Bulacan Provincial Crime Laboratory Office recovered three spent shells of a caliber .45; two spent shells of 9mm; a metal jacket of undetermined fired bullets; caliber .45 pistol marked Armscor; two magazine assembly; a Mio Sporty motorcycle without plate number; personal belongings of the victim, including PNP ID, driver’s license, wallet and cellular phone.
Manuzon surrendered to Bocaue police together with his issued 9mm Pietro Berreta.
Police brought the remains of the victim to Flavel Funeral Parlor in Bocaue for autopsy.
Record showed that Fortuno was declared AWOL after he killed SPO1 Rodrigo Cortez of the Highway Patrol Group-NCR last February and pedicab driver Kim Tanyog of Bgy. Tayuman in Tondo, Manila. ●Rudy Abular

Group wants duty free shops relocated inside Clark airport

CLARK FREEPORT–A pro-development group has asked the national government to relocate duty free shops here inside the Clark International Airport (CIA).
Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) Chairman Ruperto Cruz said duty free shops are not saving their purpose since they are located outside CIA.
“Duty free shops are supposed to be inside airports so tourists could buy items from them tax free. However, duty free shops in Clark are even far from the airport,” Cruz said.
During the Ramos presidency, Cruz said the former president located the duty free shops outside CIA saying that the airport will be expanded in a way that could reach the shops’ location.
“But that did not happen,” Cruz said adding that administrations after Ramos did not even bother to prioritize CIA’s expansion.
Cruz said if the national government does not have any intention to develop CIA, “they should close duty free shops because they do not serve their purpose.”

Pampanga dances the ‘Kuraldal’

SASMUAN, Pampanga – Dance to be healed or bear a child.
One of the oldest and major settlements in the province, Sasmuan town celebrated a five-day ritual dancing starting January 6, which was believed to not only help sickness-afflicted people but those mothers or women wanting to bear a child.
In honor of their patron saint, St. Lucy, hundreds of people coming from different provinces trooped to the chapel of St. Lucy in this year’s “Kuraldal Atlung Ari,” just in time with the celebration of the Feast of Three Kings.
The local government of Sasmuan disclosed people come here “bringing with them hopes that an ardent wish, a long-awaited pregnancy and an immediate cure for disease will soon be achieved.”
With “endless body movement of arms and feet in a merry environment. The feast is an olden practice among riverbank communities in Pampanga. The term ‘kuraldal’ was believed to be a Spanish term ‘curar’ means ‘to heal,’” it added.
As they danced, people shouted “Viva Santa Lucia! Pwera sakit!” (Long Live, St. Lucy! Deliver us from sickness!)
Healing, though, was not the sole reason for other people’s participation in Kuraldal. Devotees and pilgrims have been noted to wish for a child or its safe delivery, a safe trip, a successful board exam, or luck in the numbers game or a business venture, it said.
Rosario Pamintuan, 52, remembered when she did Kuraldal during the year 1987.
She narrated that it was one of the rituals she did to bear a child. Now, boasting is her unica hija named Rosa Bianca who’ll be turning 23 this February.
Kapampangan writer Nina Tomen who authored “Kuraldal Atlung Ari and Libad Bangka ng Apung Iru: Beyond the revelry” said that Sasmuan’s Kuraldal and the fluvial procession of Apung Iru or St. Peter, the patron of Apalit town, is considered “two of Pampanga’s most important religious events that are largely unknown outside the province.”
On January 10, a “Kawakasan” (ending) of the Kuraldal will be witnessed, said Tomen.

Capitol extends assistance to dart board champion

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Second District Board Member Fritzie David-Dizon and her brother, Porac Vice Mayor Dexter David, lauded their town mate for retaining his world ranking in the recent World Darts 2012 competition in Hong Kong.
The officials disclosed that Bryan Eribal III of Barangay Balubad, Porac finished 17 over-all in The World-Soft Darts Championship 2012 at the KTEC Kowloon International Trade Exhibition Centre last month participated in by 128 players from different countries.
“Sports help people stay away from trouble. And to have a Porac resident among the top dart players in the world is an honor as well,” said David-Dizon.
“To have Bryan helps promote Pampanga and Porac. It’s a welcome development for us,” said David.
Eribal, an endorser of Toby’s sports products, defeated top players from Japan and other nations en route to entering the Round 32. The 33-year-old top dart player is the number one in the country.
Eribal expressed gratitude to Gov. Lilia Pineda and Board Members Crisostomo Garbo, Raul Macalino and Trina Dizon for giving P40,000 financial assistance to support his expenses in the competition in Hong Kong. David-Dizon initiated the granting of assistance to Eribal.
“I thank the governor and the board members for recognizing our efforts to push sports development and help promote Pampanga. Board Member Fritzie is also commended for her commitment in helping her town mates,” said Eribal.
He was accompanied by Vice Mayor Dexter David when the bank check representing the assistance of Pineda was turned over to him.
