ANGELES CITY — University of the Philippines president Alfredo E. Pascual will be honored during the commencement exercises of Angeles University Foundation (AUF) on April 21.
AUF president Joseph Emmanuel L. Angeles said the school will confer upon Pascual a honorary doctorate degree in Pedagogy in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education having previously served as faculty and lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University from 1973 to 1978 and the Asian Institute of Management from 1980 to 1989.
In his incumbency as UP’s 20th president, he is responsible in overseeing fifteen campuses across the country with more than fifty thousand students and fourteen thousand faculty and staff.
Pascual pioneered initiatives in the Asia-Pacific Region when he assumed important positions at the Asian Development Bank from 1989 to 2008 responsible in addressing the emerging financial and investment needs of Asia.
In recognition of his numerous accomplishments, he was presented the following awards: Presidential Achievement Award by the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines in 1981 and 1983; Certificate of Recognition for Exemplary Performance by the Asian Development Bank in 2000; Project of the Year Award for the North Luzon Expressway by the Project Finance International, London in 2001; Innovation Award for the SME Sector Development Program in Pakistan by the Asian Development Bank in 2003; and Distinguished Alumnus Award by the UP College of Business Administration in 2009.
Pascual will address the graduating students of the AUF Colleges of Allied Medical Professions, Arts & Sciences, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering and Criminal Justice Education.

AirAsia launches daily flights to Puerto Princesa

CLARK FREEPORT — The Philippines’ AirAsia, the country’s newest low cost carrier, launched Saturday its maiden flight from Clark International Airport to Puerto Princesa City, Palawan with an all-in low fare from P799 one way.
The first Philippines’ AirAsia flight, PQ7015, left Clark International Airport at 5:50 p.m. On board were 176 passengers including 40 delegates from the Philippine Swimming League who will compete in the first Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn championship this weekend in Palawan.
“Puerto Princesa is the gateway to Palawan’s wealth of wonders and diverse eco-tourism offerings. Its new found fame as one of the new seven wonders of nature has generated a lot of interest from both local and international tourists. Pampanga 1st District Representative Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin wrote to Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, asking him to consider Clark, Pampanga as their next Walt Disney park. He cited that the Clark’s 4,400 hectare main zone and 27,600-hectare subzone will be perfect for a newDisneyland park.
Further, he added that that the tax-free privileges given to locators at the Clark Freeport Zone could be attractive destination for Disneyland theme park. Lazatin also cited Clark International Airport, world-class airport which is expected to serve at least P1.6-million passengers this year. He said in in his letter that the airport will be making it easier for tourists to enjoy the amenities and entertainment Disneyland is famous for without the hassles of long travels.
Apart from the airport which will offer convenience to visitors, the hotel accommodations will not be a problem as Clark has the best hotels, where visitors can likely enjoy the Filipino hospitality.
The lawmaker said the Philippines is a favorite tourist destination in Southeast Asia, with an average arrival of four million foreign visitors a year and for 2012, the government is eyeing to hit the 5-million mark.
“Together with our population of more than 90 million Filipinos, a Disneyland theme park in the Philippinescould be a major income generating site for your company,” he said.

Suspect killed in brief shootout

CAMP OLIVAS — One of two riding-in-tandem suspects was killed during a brief shootout with police at the San Agustin Bridge in Sta. Ana town last Wednesday.
Police investigation disclosed that the suspects, on board a red Euro motorcycle (without plates), held up a burger outlet, divesting service crew Paulo Ponce Magcalas, 19, of the day’s sales.
The suspects then fled toward Barangay San Agustin, according to reports.
The victim, upon seeing a mobile patrol unit in the area, immediately reported the incident, prompting the police to conduct a hot pursuit operation.
The suspects were spotted along Barangay San Agustin by the responding police. At this point, the back rider fired on the police, hitting the left front side of the patrol car.
The driver of the motorcycle then made an abrupt left turn and lost control of his vehicle, bumping into a wall.
A short exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the death of one of the suspects, while his cohort managed to elude arrest by firing at the policemen while escaping toward a nearby creek.

Cops nab man for stealing drainage cover

CAMP OLIVAS — A man who attempted to sell metal scraps he allegedly stole was arrested by local police here, reports said.
Police identified the suspect as Harrol Ramos Gonzales, 28, of Block 60, lot 23, San Isidro Resettlement Center in Magalang town.

According to police, two concerned citizens flagged down a mobile patrol unit making its rounds at the San Isidro Resettlement Center (SIRC) to report that the said suspect was allegedly seen stealing a metal drainage cover in Barangay San Isidro.
Joint elements of the Magalang Municipal Police Station, Bantay Bayan of SIRC and the Regional Public Safety Battalion were able to intercept the suspect as he was about to sell the piece of metal at a junkshop owned by one Jeffrey Motados Monsanto, 36, of Blk. 7 lot 1, Barangay San Isidro, Magalang town.
The suspect was apprised of his constitutional rights upon his arrest.
When the arresting officer conducted a body search, the suspect also yielded one transparent plastic heat-sealed sachet containing suspected dried marijuana leaves.
The confiscated suspected marijuana was turned over to the Philippine National Police crime laboratory for scientific examination, while the suspect is now detained at the Magalang police station as charges for theft and violation of Section 11 of Republic Act 9165 is now being prepared for filing in court.

Cash-for-Work program benefits 190 Angeleños

ANGELES CITY — A total of 190 individuals received their monetary compensation Thursday during the city’s release of funds in line with the implementation of the Cash-for-Work Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The program initially seeks to provide financial assistance to victims of calamities in exchange of community works through its local counterpart, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
Heide Patio, CSWDO head officer, said the recipients came from barangays Malabanias and Sapalibutad with 140 and 50 beneficiaries, respectively.
“The beneficiaries rendered community work and service to the city last December 2011. They engaged in the de-clogging of drainage canals and clearing operations on waterways in their respective communities with a daily rate of P248,” Patio said.
She said that as a social welfare and development arm of the government, the DSWD is mandated to provide assistance to local government units (LGUs) and other members of society in effectively implementing programs, projects and services that will alleviate poverty and empower disadvantaged individuals, families and communities for an improved life.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan initiated the distribution of the sum of P2,480 for each beneficiary as compensation to their 10 days of emergency work.
Pamintuan said the Cash-for-Work is anchored in a three-fold task: (1) To ensure environmental sustainability through cleaning operations, (2) To intensify the disaster mitigation program of the city by de-clogging of flood-causing canals, and (3) To provide financial assistance to the indigent residents through the cash incentives.
“The de-clogging and clearing works are timely especially that the rainy season is fast approaching. Likewise, the amount that our beneficiaries will receive would be great help to our needy constituents,” the mayor added.
The beneficiaries have extended their gratitude for the immediate release of the monetary incentives.
“This program is a big help to us poor citizens of the city. This money will enable us to get by our household, health, and financial needs,” said one of the beneficiaries.
The Cash-for-Work program is a flagship project of the DSWD aiming to provide families badly affected by calamities and those residing on disaster prone areas throughout the Philippines, with financial assistance funded by the regional office. (RGN)

Mayor discourages moms from giving birth at home

CANDABA — Mayor Jerry Pelayo earlier instructed the Municipal Health Office (MHO) chief to monitor the status of pregnant women in the villages here and discourage them from giving birth at home.
Pelayo told Dr. Abigail Gallardo, the newly appointed MHO chief, to remind midwifes under her watch to encourage pregnant mommies to give birth at the birthing stations put up here, instead of inside their own homes.
“Wala nang manganganak sa bahay mula ngayon. Mas mabuti kung manganganak na lamang sila sa pinagawa nating birthing station sa likod ng munisipyo (From now on, all pregnant mothers should deliver their babies at our birthing station, not at home),” he said.
The mayor added that the safety of the mothers should be given outmost consideration as delivery at home is not healthy for the baby and the mother for lack of facilities.
Pelayo also warned midwifes who will be caught violating his instruction that they will be dealt with accordingly.
Earlier, the Municipal Government constructed a birthing station at the back of the municipal hall in the town plaza to accommodate pregnant women who cannot afford to pay private doctors. (HPM)

Capitol strengthens agro-eco-tourism efforts

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Government has strengthened its agro-eco-tourism efforts in promoting the indigenous peoples’ socio-cultural heritage and economic growth in Barangay Nabuclod in Floridablanca town.
This came as Governor Lilia Pineda envisioned making the “Pampanga Upland Eco-Adventure” project in the said town a premier tourist destination in the country and in the region in particular.
Pineda believed that with the full cooperation of all sectors in the province, the project in the said upland barangay has a “bright future” as an ideal place for both local and foreign tourists.
The Pampanga Upland Eco-Adventure project is aimed at focusing the development of eco-tourism in the area while giving emphasis to the provision of livelihood opportunities for the Aetas.
Roy Imperial, consultant to the governor, said initially that Capitol has put up necessary facilities in the area, while plans for other structures like additional view decks are already being finalized.
Imperial said some of the other proposed structures are the Stairway to Bolven, the Hanging Restaurant, Ascension Site, and a new zipline to be installed at the View Deck 3.
The first view deck with a small swimming pool for Aeta kids offers a view of the Aeta Village and serves as venue for the Aetas’ cultural presentations.
Among other proposed activities are mountain hiking, gareta riding, and cable car riding.
Visitors can also go to the Board Walk and the Hanging Restaurant from one of the view decks. Facilities like mobile store, camping site, and nipa huts will be built in the area offering traditional massage services.
With these plans, the governor announced that the Provincial Government, through the Provincial Manpower Training Center, is now providing the necessary trainings in traditional massage for interested Aetas.
