Cava exports hit all-time high

Record Cava exports have brightened up the Spanish sparkling wine’s bleak domestic market in 2011.
Cava producers sold a record breaking 152 million bottles to foreign markets in 2011 – a 2% increase over 2010 – but poor domestic sales were mainly to blame for a 2% fall in overall sales in 2011.
Taking into consideration current economic conditions, the Cava regulatory board chairman, Gustavo García Guillamet, said ‘it is very positive to claim that cava sales achieved a record figure in the foreign market’.
However, sales in Spain have been difficult within the domestic market, compounded by an unemployment rate of more than 22%. During the last quarter of 2011, Cava sales suffered an ‘unexpected’ fall of 8.7% compared to 2010.
Exports have grown steadily in the past decade, rising by almost 50%, according to the regulatory body’s figures.
Nick Mantella, managing director of Codorniu UK, told decanter.com’Sparkling wine as a whole is becoming an everyday product rather than a celebratory drink.
‘There has been a lot of promotional activity driving the sparkling category in the last 10 years. Sparkling wine is a minority category compared to still wines. It is not in everybody’s daily repertoire so we have to work extremely hard to drive people to it,’ he added.

Is 2009 vintage Bordeaux’s wine of the century?

The 2009 Bordeaux harvest isn’t being heralded as “the vintage of the century” … yet.
Canny French marketers — the folks who that convinced Americans to eat snails and pay for water — wouldn’t cash in that time-tested banner with 91 vintages yet to ripen on the vine.
But in an age with an under-abundance of good news, the 2009 red Bordeaux vintage is a winning situation for us all.
For the consumer, these are classic Cabernet Sauvignon- and Merlot-based wines, rich in texture and beautifully balanced with seamless interplay of ripened black fruit, fine tannin, pleasing acidity and clear expression of Bordeaux’s unique soil, climate and culture.
For producers, the consistently excellent quality in all price categories can attract new drinkers to a category that has steadily lost business to New World regions, especially those in the U.S. and Chile.
“This is an opportunity to purchase a classic wine of outstanding quality, that is very approachable now, but will really improve with a couple of years age,” says Simon Lambert, senior wine consultant for The Chicago Wine Company, retailer and auctioneer of fine wine. “With delicious, top-ranked wines for $30 and up, it simply disproves the common perception that all Bordeaux is expensive.”
“Top rank” refers to Bordeaux’s Classification, which has defined the relative value of each property’s output since 1855. Note: the classification defines value — much the same as a website’s “Sort by Price” tool — not necessarily quality or appeal. The Premier Grand Cru’s (First Great Growths) sell instantaneously for dizzying prices ($2,000 per bottle before release), but “Super Seconds” through Fifth Growths all have ardent customers.
For top quality coupled with value, Lambert recommends wines below top Cru’s, including Chateau La Lagune(Third Growth, Haut Medoc; currently $63.50 at The Chicago Wine Company) andChateau La Croix de Gay ($36.50; Pomerol was not included in the Classification.) Details at www.tcwc.com or (630) 594-2972.
You’ll need to wait until spring 2012, however, to pick up your order. Such is the worldwide demand for Bordeaux (and the skill of the French marketer), that wines are sold in advance of delivery; in fact, in advance of bottling.
Lambert, for instance, traveled to Bordeaux to taste the wines from barrel in 2010. “They’ve been going up in price ever since,” he says with mixed emotion.
But outstanding quality is also available in Bordeaux Superieur — the more casual tier — already on retail shelves.
“I want my customers to try before they buy,” says Jeff Sukowski, general manager of Malloy’s Finest Wines & Spirits in Glen Ellyn, Lisle and Naperville. “Even though I can offer excellent wine for under $20, (see Ross’ Choice), I want to know people are comfortable with the flavors of Bordeaux.” (Visit MalloysFinest.com for tasting dates and online shopping.)
Then he adds, “I’ve enjoyed every 2009 Bordeaux I’ve tasted.”
Check with Sukowski, Lambert and other local retailers for their selection and tastings of red Bordeaux. Then you can decide if 2009 is the vintage of your century.

CHINA SHOWS THIRST FOR TUSCAN WHITES

China has become Tuscany’s third largest marker for white wines.
According to Giuseppe Liberatore, director general of Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, the market for white wines from Tuscany reached €1.9 million in China in 2011, accounting for 11.6% of the region’s total.
“The export of quality white wines to China in 2011 is in net growth, reaching approximately €1.9 million and equal to 11.6% of the Tuscan total in the world, making the country the third market,” he said at a press conference during the BuyWine fair taking place in Florence on 16 February, with many Asian journalists and buyers in attendance.
Speaking of red wine exports, he added, “The Chinese market passed from 10th to 8th place in just one year, and the export of Tuscan red wines from January to September 2011 almost tripled, passing from €1.7 in 2010 to €4.3 in 2011.”
Outside China, Liberatore stressed the growth in Brazil. “With approximately 3.4 million red wines exported during the first nine months of 2011 (1.1% of the total Tuscan imports) Brazil is the tenth market for Tuscany and in one year has grown 54.2%.”

Consumers pay more for tongue-twisting wines

Wine tastes better if a winery is difficult to pronounce, according to new research.
In a study by Brock University professor, Dr Antonia Mantonakis, it found English-speaking wine consumers were more likely to buy wine from a winery with a difficult-to-pronounce name.
Participants also rated wine more highly in a blind tasting, and were prepared to pay more money for the same wine, if it had a name that was difficult to say in English.
Dr Mantonakis said: ”Wines associated with more difficult-to-pronounce names are associated with higher ratings.
‘Things that are difficult to pronounce are unfamiliar because they are usually rare,’ she added.
‘Perception of tastes are different if they are associated with a more disfluent winery name and that result is especially pronounced for high wine-knowledge participants.’
Mantonakis admitted the laboratory findings might not be reflected in wine purchases. ‘Whether these results would replicate in a more natural setting is something that we don’t know.’

Chateau Margaux unveils organic and screwcap wines

Organics and screwcaps could be the way forward for Chateau Margaux, according to new research by the Bordeaux first growth.
The estate’s managing director and winemaker, Paul Pontallier, claimed that organic farming was the future direction for Margaux. ‘We are very close to organic farming. I think it’s a matter of a couple of years,’ he said at a London seminar.
Pontallier presented 16 wines at the event, including wines produced using alternative farming methods.
The organic and biodynamic examples rated more highly than those conventionally farmed among trade members.
Margaux also unveiled its experiments with alternative wine closures on the estate’s second wine, Pavillon Rouge.
‘We’ve all been disappointed and frustrated by corked bottles. Another closure would be welcome if it is better,’ he said.
While trials on synthetic corks were ‘absolutely catastrophic,’ screwcaps fared better.
A 2003 red wine sealed with an impermeable screwcap closure was preferred to the same wine sealed with a cork or a permeable screwcap at yesterday’s event. Pontallier revealed that this was consistent with tests at the estate.
‘If we have consistent proof that it works better, I don’t see how we could resist,’ said Pontallier on moving to screwcaps.
The same test on a 2004 white wine from the property drew a less conclusive result from both the audience and Pontallier, who preferred natural cork.
‘It’s very difficult to draw conclusions and every time we do these experiments, we don’t agree. Or if we agree it’s on things we don’t expect to agree on,’ he added.

Why Skinnygirl Wines Are A Bad Idea

Recently I read a news item on WineSpectator.comthat reality TV star and former Real Housewives cast member Bethenny Frankel is launching a wine label called Skinnygirl. Oh no, just what we need, another wine brand pandering to women.
Bethenny plays off the success of her Skinnygirl Margarita, which clocks in at 100 calories per five ounce serving (with or without salt). The average margarita at your favorite bar can be anywhere from 350 to 750 hefty calories, thanks to a premix or limeade, triple sec and tequila. Skinnygirl comes premixed, alcohol included, so all you have to do is chill it, crack open the screw cap and pour. What’s not to like? This pre-made margarita flew out the doors of retailers.
Bethenny continued to build the Skinnygirl brand, with a White Cranberry Cosmo at less than 100 calories and Skinnygirl Sangria, with 132 calories per five ounce serving. Her “new girls,” as she calls them, are a lineup of three wines, a Rosé of Syrah and Grenache, a white blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio and a Syrah-based red. All have 100 calories per five ounce serving and 12 percent alcohol and will sell for $15 a bottle.
I understand why the Skinnygirl Margarita is so popular. The calorie savings are enormous. I bought a bottle and poured myself a cocktail, over ice. The flavor is what you’d expect in a margarita, tart with lime and that kick from tequila. While it is not a complex concoction, it is a fast cocktail.
But the thought of Skinnygirl wines drives me crazy. Why? Two reasons. One, most five ounce pours of wine have about 128 calories, 25.6 25 calories per ounce, according to the USDA. There’s no huge calorie savings here.
Wine’s calories come from the alcohol and sugar content. Most wines are dry, which means there’s no sugar in them. Sometimes wine tastes sweet, but that’s usually due to the ripe fruit flavors, which we perceive as sweetness.
There are also wines that are made to be sweet, like dessert wines and port. These wines are concentrated, with about 50 calories per ounce. But the standard serving of port or sweet wine is much smaller, at two to three ounces, which is about 100 to 150 calories or so. That’s equivalent to or less than any dessert you’d eat. So the Skinnygirl low calorie premise just doesn’t work.
The second reason is more serious for me, that this is yet another wine brand marketed to women, presumably because we all want a lower calorie beverage and that we want fun, not complex wines.
But I’m a wine drinker, not a “female” wine drinker. Would anyone make a Skinnyboy wine? I don’t think so. Why do we need a special wine brand, especially when the calorie savings are about 25 calories per glass? According to most recommendations, women should not drink more than one glass of wine a day.
“I’m not a wine snob,” Bethenny tells WineSpectator.com. Neither am I. What I don’t like are brands that approach selling wine to women differently from men.
Low calorie wines are not an original concept. In 2005 wine giant Beringer launched a brand called White Lie. The initial release, a Chardonnay, was billed as being lower in calories and alcohol. According to this press release, White Lie has 97.4 calories per five ounces and 9.8% alcohol. The wine was marketed as being what women want, something easy and simple with fewer calories. At $10 per bottle, it had a lower price point than Skinnygirl wines. But I can’t seem to find any White Lie wine on the Beringer site or in a Google search for sale. Hmmm. Maybe that approach didn’t work out.
I wasn’t crazy about the White Lie wines either. To me it felt like pandering to a stereotypical female audience.
That’s why I think Skinnygirl wines are a bad idea. Wine is intimidating enough. Women have fought hard to be considered equals when it comes to wine, whether professionally or in our private lives. Many of us get handed the wine list at the restaurant, which is great. Would we order a Skinnygirl wine?
Kudos to Bethenny for creating the Skinnygirl Margarita and for it being wildly successful. Brilliant idea. I’m sure the wine will also fly off the shelves, as most things tied to a celebrity usually sell well. But when it comes to wine, this is not a label that we need. It just fuels the stereotype about women and wine, and it’s not a pretty one.

World of Pinot Noir: Popular grape gets its weekend

About one-third of them are from San Luis Obispo County. Most others are from other parts of the state, but some will travel from as far away as New Zealand, New York and Florida.
“Our guests are looking for an experience,” said Damon Miele, event coordinator. “We definitely draw a lot of industry people. The person behind the tables pouring the wine has to be a winemaker or principle.”
About 100 wineries will be featured at various events March 2 and 3, based around the Cliffs Resort.
Events range from an $8.30-per-person discussion on the role of pinot in sparkling wines to a $400 dinner at Lido Restaurant featuring vintage wines from the Court of Master Sommeliers.
Several attractions are sold out.
One new approach this year combines outdoor activities — either golf, kayaking or hiking — with a winemaker lunch and, of course, pinot.
For those with a more technical bent, Chamisal Vineyards in Edna Valley will host a pair of seminars: “Technique vs. Terroir” highlights an experiment with vintners who exchanged fruit to see whether location of the vineyard or style of the winemaker has a greater effect.
“Natural Winemaking” debates practices that fall under an umbrella of “naked” or “natural” wines, which could include biodynamic, organic and other nontraditional practices.
“Natural winemaking is hot in the wine press right now,” Miele said. But “there’s no definition for it. It’s all kind of subjective so I think it’s going to be a really interesting panel discussion.”

ARGENTINA SHOWS WHITE POTENTIAL

The quality of Argentina’s white wine has risen dramatically in recent years, thinks Laurie Webster, CEO of Las Bodegas.
Speaking to the drinks business he said: “Argentina has turned a corner with white wines. Three or four years ago I wouldn’t have thought about importing Argentine Sauvignon because I didn’t think the wines were able to compete with the likes of Chile and New Zealand.
“But there’s been a big uplift in quality and we’re seeing both personality and regionality in the wines.”
Out of 30 wines that Webster has added to his range for this year, 11 are white and include Sauvignon Blanc, Fiano, Chardonnay, Torrontés and Viognier.
Webster said he wasn’t “flying the flag for other varieties” coming out of Argentina but rather, “I think what we have here is representative of what’s going on in the country. It’s a statement of what’s happening.”
On the subject of Argentina’s pricing, Webster stated that it was more important that Argentina kept its value up and he said he would “sacrifice volume for style and quality” quite happily.
“I’ve given up trying to source cheap wines from Argentina because either they don’t exist or they’re terrible,” he continued.
“My model is New Zealand. With the exception of a little wobble a couple of years ago they’ve managed their ‘brand’ admirably.
Argentina has the second highest price per bottle in the UK (after New Zealand) and it’s the reason Argentina is not really on supermarket shelves let’s be honest. And I don’t think it ever will be.”

Wine-and-Golf Pairings Back in Season

The 2012 PGA Tour season is back in full swing, which means Unfiltered’s favorite final-round pairing of wine and golf will be on the DVR menu for many months to come. Last week, Beringer Vineyards, the official wine of the PGA, Champions and Nationwide tours, announced its newest partner, golfer Justin Leonard, who won the 1997 British Open and 1998 Players Championship. Leonard, who will appear in various Beringer ads this summer, joins a very long list of golfers who have turned their eyes from the fairway to the vineyard.Ernie Els’ label has long stood on its own as one of South Africa’s most prestigious wines. Els’ countrymen David Frost and Retief Goosen have wine brands as well. Greg Norman’s Australian and Californian wines are top sellers. Annika Sorrenstam, Nick Faldo andMark O’Meara all play the wine game. Even all-time greats Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have time for wine. Not surprisingly, golfers took up half the panel at the Athletes and Their Wines seminar at October’s Wine Spectator New York Wine Experience. It seems golf and fine wine have become ubiquitous, with good reason—they’re probably the only two vices that retirees and their cardiologists can agree on.
The Chinese invasion of Bordeaux shows no signs of slowing. A few hours after closing on the purchase of Château du Grand Moueys, a sprawling 420-acre estate in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers region, new owner Zhang Jinshan sat down with Unfiltered to discuss his game plan. At first, Zhang, an amiable goji berry spirits tycoon from Ningxia, China, revealed a strategy so predictable that Unfiltered begins to suspect a central committee directive for Sino-Bordelais investments: purchase picturesque historic castle in modest appellation, drop some serious change to repackage as super-premium wine and use vineyard estate as centerpiece for high-volume export business—in this case, a modest 1.2 million bottles per year. Then things got interesting. First, rather than diverting the entire production to China, Zhang will keep 10 to 20 percent of his Merlot-dominated blend in the U.S. and European markets so we can all enjoy the efforts of consulting guru Stéphane Derenoncourt to produce a smooth, fruity, elegant wine, “St.-Emilion style.” Major investments are planned for the cellars. Next, the Gothic Revival château will receive a $5 million facelift, and re- emerge as a boutique hotel and 70-seat gourmet restaurant, run by restaurateur Lei Wu An, who is something of a celebrity in Ningxia for his eight Dong Gan eateries. The decor will be classic, contemporary French, but Lei told Unfiltered that the food will be an authentic, modern fusion of French and Chinese, with ingredients and chefs flown in to do the job properly. Think Peking duck roasted over fragrant jujube and pear tree wood, served on a terrace overlooking 145 acres of vineyards following nine holes on the new golf course. Zhang envisions bringing contemporary Chinese culture—cuisine, art exhibits, concerts—to Bordeaux, East meets West in luxurious wine country.
It’s become nigh impossible to avoid reality (TV) in the wine world these days. A few weeks ago we told you about Kendall-Jackson’s Rick Tigner going Undercover. On Feb. 10, inventor Eric Corti presented his Wine Balloon to the investor judges of ABC’s Shark Tank. The Wine Balloon is a hand-pumped inflatable rubber balloon inserted into a half-emptied bottle of wine and inflated, displacing the oxygen and theoretically preserving the wine for several days. The Sharks bit, offering Corti as much as $600,000 for full ownership of his invention (he passed). And this past Friday, Wine Spectator reported that original Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel’s wildly popular Skinnygirl brand is introducing three California wines next month. Of course, the undisputed king of the reality TV wine world is the winemaking Bachelor, Ben Flajnik of Sonoma’s Envolve winery. This week was the seasonal “hometowns” episode, in which our hero visits the homes of his final four lady friends and meets their families. Fittingly, Flajnik watched the episode from his own home, in Sonoma, with his sister, Julia, and their mom. Flajnik, who does all the cooking at the San Francisco apartment/bachelor pad he shares with his two partners, made chicken parmesan, and they opened a bottle of Paul Dolan Deep Red Mendocino County 2007 (the Bachelor is very into biodynamic wines; most of Envolve’s grapes are sourced from organic or biodynamic vineyards). It was the first time Ben watched an episode with his mother, who awkwardly laughed her way through the make-out scenes. It’s down to three suitorettes for Ben now—includingUnfiltered’s episode 1 pick, Nicki—and they’re off to Switzerland this week. The Bachelor tells us he’ll be keeping it real with a Swiss wine this Monday night, Cave des Tielleuls Réserve.

Grape growers looking for rain in 2012

After three years of drought (2007-09) and two wet years (2010-11) — this year is shaping up to be another very dry year. There were two decent rains that somewhat recharged the soil profile, unfortunately they occurred as the 2011 harvest was wrapping up. Those were followed by one rain in November and a shower in December, which provided much of the fall rainfall total (about 45 percent of average). January did not add much more and a good number of vineyards received winter irrigation.
The total rainfall total for the months of October, November and December ended up at 3 inches for the north county and 1.7 inches for the south county. Not since 1976-77 has it been this dry, especially as December was the third driest on record. Dry conditions look to continue and irrigation is probably a good investment right now. Grapes are a low-demand crop for water and nitrogen, compared to most other fruits and nuts, but extremely dry conditions can affect the strength and uniformity of bud push in addition to negatively affecting the final development phases of this year’s fruit buds.
With that in mind, even if you put on a good solid irrigation of 24 to 36 hours or more last month, it would not hurt to put another 24 hours or so, depending on your emitter spacing, size of the emitters, soil type and variety/rootstock. Although this won’t recharge deep soil profiles, we still have a ways to go before the “rainy” season ends and things can turn around very fast. So it’s easy enough to apply some more water at or after bud break, if the drought continues.
Checking out the irrigation system is neither a bad idea nor a waste of time. Checking out the soil profile with an auger or even just a little digging with a shovel may help confirm how well the winter rains and irrigation may have managed your soil profile. Overall it seems there is decent moisture in the top 2 or 3 feet in most vineyards, but that is about it.
Even though January was close to average in total rainfall, seasonal totals are falling behind again. As of the first week in February the north county is at 6.1 inches (44 percent of historical average to date) and the south county is just at 3.2 total inches (approximately 37 percent). Last year at this time there was a total of 13.5 inches of rain in the Lodi area.
The curious weather pattern this winter (besides extreme dryness) is that most daytime maximum temperatures have been slightly above average, while most night time minimums have been well below average; giving the area a summer-like days with winter-like nights.
