“As the Holy Month of Ramadan begins, we send greetings of solidarity to all our Muslim-Filipino brothers and sisters,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
“The coming weeks shall be dedicated to the solemn fulfillment of the tenets of your spirituality, demanding great sacrifice and due discipline, as an act of surrender to Allah, the beneficent, and all-merciful,” he added.
“These are times when your government has been working with all people of goodwill, to restore trust and confidence in our vital institutions. May we all be filled with this spirit of cooperation, respect, and confidence as we seek the path of peace,” he further said.

MANILA (Updated 7:16 p.m.) — Rains in Luzon will continue this weekend after a low pressure area off the northeastern Philippines developed into a tropical depression, prompting the state weather bureau to raise public storm signal number 1 in 11 areas.
As of 5 p.m. Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed the following areas under signal no. 1 because of Tropical Depression “Ferdie”: Isabela, Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, Batanes Group of Islands, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Mountain Province.
These areas are expected to receive heavy to intense rainfall (10-25 millimeters per hour) as Ferdie carries maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour, moving west northwest at 13 kph.
The tropical cyclone was last seen 130 km east of Aparri, Cagayan and will be 140 km north northwest of Laoag City Saturday afternoon and 380 km west northwest of Laoag City by Sunday afternoon.
“It has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical storm. Ferdie is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Sunday afternoon or evening through the West Philippine Sea before heading to Southern China,” Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando said in a text message.
By Monday afternoon, Ferdie is expected to be 660 km west northwest of Laoag City, according to Pagasa.
Before it became the country’s sixth cyclone this year, the weather disturbance caused the cancellation of classes and flights in Manila and nearby areas.
The local government units (LGUs) that announced suspension of afternoon classes in pre-school, elementary and secondary levels (both public and private) were Pasay City; San Mateo, Rizal; and Marikina City.
Manila announced suspension of afternoon classes for the three levels for public schools only.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said the suspension of classes in colleges and universities are at the discretion of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).
Classes in daycare centers, public and private schools up to secondary level were also called off in Parañaque City and Pateros due to possible flooding.
Other LGUs that announced suspension of classes for the entire day were: Antipolo City, Angono, Morong, Rodriguez, Teresa and Cainta in Rizal; Bacoor, Noveleta, Rosario and Cavite City in Cavite; and Malabon City.
Residents living in low-lying areas and along mountain slopes are still advised to be alert for possible occurrence of flash floods and landslides due to the cyclone’s effects and the enhanced southwest monsoon. MANILA — Tropical Depression “Ferdie” continues to move away from the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the state weather bureau announced Saturday.
At 10 p.m. Saturday, the center of Ferdie was spotted 350 kilometers (km) northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Ferdie continues to move west northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), Pagasa said, adding the weather disturbance is expected to be at 650 km west northwest of Laoag City by Sunday night.
The Pagasa has now lowered all public storm warning signals.
Ferdie has brought floods in large areas in Luzon, leaving at least two people dead and six missing and halting traffic in parts of Manila for hours.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Saturday that the body of a man was recovered from flood waters in Laguna province and another person drowned in swollen Pandanga creek in La Union province.
Many roads in the sprawling capital area were also underwater for hours, halting traffic.
Pasay City Mayor Antonio Calixto said some areas near Manila’s airport had neck-deep floods, forcing vehicles to take other routes.
The fatalities, meanwhile, were identified as Jonathan Sagodaquiel, 31, of Barangay Wawa, Lumban in Laguna; and Wilcor Rellera, 35, from Barangay San Isidro, Naguillan in La Union.
The missing persons were identified as Junrel Tamario, 20, a resident of Doña Calixta, Barangay San Andres, Cainta, Rizal; Niel Calay, 6, from Barangay Lon-oy, San Gabriel, La Union; and four fishermen, namely: Teodorico Caampued, 60; Robinson Siso, 50; Rogelio Canayon, 35; and Levi Caballero, 23; all from Barangay Victory, Bolinao, Pangasinan.

MANILA — Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has finally met his estranged father after 42 years of separation, following an exhibition game in the Philippines.
Philander Rodman Jr., who has acknowledged fathering 29 children by 16 mothers, says he was happy and surprised that his son agreed to meet him late Wednesday. He tried to meet the basketball Hall of Famer during another game in Manila in 2006.
“It was great,” he said Thursday of the first time he held his son’s hands since they last met in December 1969.
“I’ve been trying to meet him for years. And then last night, boom, I met him. I was really, really happy and very surprised,” he told The Associated Press.
The NBA “Alumni” team, which also included Scott Pippen, Horace Grant, and Mitch Richmond, played against former top professional Philippine Basketball Association players in the All-Star Challenge. The Alumni won.
Philander, who has been living in the Philippines for nearly 50 years, said he wanted to explain to his son that he didn’t abandon his family in the United States, but they only had time for greetings and handshakes.
He said he spent only about three minutes with his son, who was also busy signing autographs.
“I really, really felt good,” he said. “It’s the beginning of something new.”
He gave his number to his son who promised to call.
He said his son did not even want to talk about him six years ago, but he was encouraged to try again to meet him after Tuesday’s press conference where the former Pistons and Bulls star invited him to watch Wednesday’s game.
“I don’t hate the guy that brought me into this world,” Dennis Rodman told reporters. “The fact is, if I saw him, I’ll just tell him, ‘You know, you’re a friend of mine.'”
During a break, with seconds left to the end of the game, Dennis Rodman grabbed a microphone acknowledged his father’s presence and pointed to him in the arena.
The crowd applauded as the elder Rodman stood up wearing a red baseball cap that said “Yes, Dennis Rodman is my son.”
The 71-year-old Vietnam War veteran now operates the Rodman’s Rainbow Obamaburger restaurant in northern Angeles City.
He said his restaurant menu includes burgers with red, yellow and green colored buns and fries, colors associated with his flamboyant son. (AP)
