CITY OF SAN FERNANDO\u2013Two Kapampangans were among the seven individuals recently chosen and awarded by President Benigno Aquino III as \u201cThe Outstanding Young Men\u201d (TOYM) of 2012.
\nThe two Kapampangan men, Ivan Anthony Henares from this city and Allan \u201capl.de.ap\u201d Lindo Pineda from Angeles City, received their award from Mr. Aquino during a ceremony at the Malacanan Palace on Wednesday.
\nHenares was chosen for his contributions in heritage conservation while Pineda for contemporary music.
\nIn his speech, Mr. Aquino said Henares \u201chas given a new generation of people an appreciation of our heritage.\u201d
\nMeanwhile, Mr. Aquino described Pineda as his \u201cfriend\u201d who gives back to his fellow Filipinos aside from entertaining them.
\n\u201cWe have an international hip-hop phenomenon, who found his initial success by reminding each of us to \u2018practice what we preach\u2019 \u2014 a person I am fortunate to call friend, who I often see in awarding ceremonies and events because he doesn\u2019t just entertain his countrymen, he gives back to them, especially in times of great challenge: In apl.de.ap, we see all of these things,\u201d Mr. Aquino said.
\nPineda, along with his fellow awardees, even staged a performance during the awarding ceremonies.
\n\u201cTo our awardees: The best of your work is still to come. You are going to be a vital part of our nation\u2019s future,\u201d Mr. Aquino told all seven awardees.
\nAside from Henares and Pineda, other awardees include Democratic Independent Workers\u2019 Association party-list Representative Emmeline Aglipay for public service; Warren Baticados for veterinary medicine; the Azkals\u2019 Emelio \u201cChieffy\u201d Caligdong for sports; Abelardo David for community occupational rehabilitation and Rodrigo \u201cJiggy\u201d Manicad Jr. for broadcast journalism.

\nHenares, this city\u2019s former tourism officer, is a well-known heritage advocate.
\nHe has explored the Philippines\u2019 7,107 islands and has visited the country\u2019s 80 provinces.
\nAlso an educator of tourism at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Henares sits as the vice president of the Heritage Conservation Society and the Philippine representative to ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC).
\nHenares was named \u201cMost Outstanding Kapampangan for Youth Leadership\u201d in 2001.
\nOn the other hand, Pineda is well-known for being a member of the international singing group \u201cBlack Eyed Peas.\u201d
\nPineda hails from Barangay Sapang Bato, a known Aeta community in Angeles City.
\nPineda has brought his Filipino culture into his singing group by writing the song \u201cThe Apl Song\u201d in 2003. The song explained his life history.

\nThe TOYM awardees were chosen by the board of judges chaired by Supreme Court Justice Arturo Brion.
\nAside from Brion, judges also include Bank of the Philippine Islands president and Chief Executive Office Aurelio Montinola III, Bro. Ricardo Laguda of the De La Salle University, PBA Commissioner Chito Salud, Miguel Belmonte, president and CEO of The STAR, Raul Sunico of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Agnes Mejia, dean of the UP College of Medicine.
