WITH the controversial reproductive health (RH) bill swiftly acted upon by President Benigno Aquino III, a member of Congress appealed to him to do the same on the proposed law expected to benefit at least 2.9 million household service workers in the country.
\n\u201cThe Kasambahay bill, if it becomes a law, would have been a great Christmas gift to all our domestic workers. I just hope PNoy signs it soon,\u201d San Juan City Representative JV Ejercito, one of the authors, posted in his Twitter account, @jvejercito, Saturday.
\nAccording to the lawmaker, the bicameral conference committee report on the kasambahay bill has been ratified by both the House of Representatives and the Senate ahead of the RH bill.
\nAquino signed the RH bill into law just two days after the bicam report was ratified in both chambers of Congress.
\n“The Kasambay Bill was ratified by both the Senate and the House of Representatives over a month already but it has not been signed by PNoy,” Ejercito said.
\n“I stand to be corrected, (it was ratified) almost a month. I don’t think it has lapsed. But if ever, why will PNoy not sign a legislation like Kasambahay?” he then tweeted.
\nAn approved measure that is left unsigned by the President lapses into law after 30 days.
\nIn an interview last November 25, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the kasambahay bill will be signed as soon as possible, considering that it included in the priority measures of the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council.
\nMembers of the bicam earlier agreed to set the minimum wage of domestic workers at no less than P2,500 a month for those employed in the National Capital Region.
\nThose employed in chartered cities and first class municipalities are entitled to P2,000 a month; and P1,500 a month for those employed in other municipalities.
\nAside from the monthly pay and basic necessities of food, board and lodging and medical assistance, employers shall also provide kasambahays with SSS, PhilHealth, and PagIBIG Fund coverage.
\nThe reconciled bill also entitles domestic workers who have rendered at least one year of service an annual service incentive leave of five days with pay, as well as 13th month pay.(Kathrina Alvarez\/Sunnex)
