FOLLOWING his official visit to the United Kingdom, President Benigno Aquino III will go straight to the United States (US) to meet with US President Barack Obama in Washington.
\nForeign Affairs Assistant Secretary Patricia Ann Paez, in a press briefing in Malacanang Friday, said the two state leaders will be meeting on June 8 where they are expected to discuss issues and developments in the Asia-Pacific Region.
\n\u201cIn their meeting at the Oval Office, the two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest. These include our close strategic, economic, and people-to-people ties and our cooperation in the Asia Pacific region as the US refocuses in the Asia Pacific characterized by economic dynamism as well as fresh challenges,\u201d she said.
\nShe added that President Obama has also expressed interest in being updated about President Aquino\u2019s vision for the Philippines and his development agenda specifically to promote inclusive growth, create equal opportunities for all, and foster good governance.
\nPaez refused to confirm whether the territorial dispute between the Philippines and China in the West Philippine Sea will be discussed.
\n“I really cannot say anything categorical about it. But I would suppose that there is. Well, I\u2019ll just leave my answer to that because I don\u2019t want to preempt anything that the President might say and I cannot really know what will happen or how their talks will go. But let me just say that both the Philippines and the United States desire a constructive engagement with China,\u201d she said.
\nPaez said President Aquino’s visit to Washington, DC reflects the heightened engagement between the Philippines and US.
\nUS Secretary of State Hillary Secretary Clinton will host a luncheon in honor of the President and his delegation, said Paez, adding that some 200 guests are invited to the event.
\nPresident Aquino will also meet with the top leaders of the US Senate at a reception hosted by Senate President Pro Tempore Daniel Inouye at the US Capitol. Senator Inouye has been the champion of Philippine interest in the US Congress and has manifested steadfast support for the Philippines as chairman of the Senate appropriations committee.
\nPresident Aquino will also meet with US business leaders and investors while in the capital of the United States.
\nHe is also scheduled to grace the launching of the US-Philippine Society which aims to provide information on the Philippines to US policy makers; to convey to the Philippine government objective feedback on perceptions in the US regarding the country; and to undertake partnership programs with NGOs and other institutions to increase public exposure to Philippine issues.
\nThe society will also enlist the support and participation of the around 3.1 million Filipinos in the United States, said Paez.
\nThe President will also be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
\nBefore he goes back to Manila, he will meet with the Filipino-American community in Los Angeles.
\nThere are about 322,110 Filipinos who reside in the county of Los Angeles comprising 3.1 percent of the city’s population.
\nAquino will be staying in the US from June 6 to 8. His meeting was upon the invitation of President Obama, which was first coursed through US Secretary of State Clinton when she visited the Philippines on November 2011.
\nObama personally conveyed the invitation to Aquino when they met in Bali during the Asean-US Leaders’ Meeting also in November.
\nThe Oval Office meeting between the two presidents will be their fourth meeting in a span of two years.
\nThe first meeting was in September 2010 during the Asean-US Leaders’ Meeting in New York. Their second meeting was in September 2011 during the launching of the Open Government partnership also in New York. The third meeting was last November 18, 2011 during the Asean-US Leaders’ Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. <\/p>\n
