COMMUNITY volunteerism is the vital key for a better tomorrow, Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said on Wednesday.
\nSpeaking before multi-sectoral representatives, city officials and Masons during the commemoration of the 70th death anniversary of Kapampangan martyr Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos at Heroes Hall, Rodriguez said community volunteerism enables citizens to participate and have a hand on current important issues like climate change.
\n \u201cIt is important that this spirit of volunteerism be instilled into our consciousness for the future of the generations to come. We must be able to make sacrifices for the interest of the many and be selfless, like our beloved Don Jose Abad Santos who chose to die for our country than to collaborate with the enemy,\u201d he noted.
\nFor one to successfully see a better future, Rodriguez added, means looking back at the past.
\n\u201cWe must always look back and give value to the past. Like the martyred chief justice and even the late Ninoy Aquino, whom I consider not just local but national heroes, we must give importance to their heroism by being volunteers who are ready to make the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d said Rodriguez.
\nOn the question of the exact date of Jose Abad Santos\u2019 death, as many believe it is May 7 [thus, making that day every year a holiday in Pampanga according to law], Rodriguez quipped: \u201cIt does not really matter. What is more important is we remember his heroism and take pride that he is a Fernandino and Kapampangan.\u201d
\nAmanda Abad Santos-Gana and Jose Abad Santos III, grandchildren of the chief justice from son Pepito, thanked the City Government and the people of San Fernando for always remembering their grandfather.
