CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Board Member Nestor Tolentino, chairman of the Provincial Board (PB) committee on environment and natural resources, said the Province will fight for the rights of Kapampangan fisherfolk, particularly those from coastal areas of Macabebe, Masantol and Sasmuan.
\nTolentino\u2019s stand, supported by other board members, came after about 10 fishermen from the coastal areas of Pampanga were reportedly jailed for alleged \u201cillegal fishing and encroachment\u201d in Bataan waters.
\nThe poor fishermen, Tolentino said, were bailed out of jail by Governor Lilia Pineda at the tune of P8,000 each.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s funny because we do not have a copy of the Bataan ordinance on fishing. They were simply apprehended and put behind bars without a clear explanation of the boundary delineation just like the shoals of the country disputed by China. It\u2019s unfair for our fishermen who make a living. Why? We don\u2019t even apprehend Bataan fishermen who encroach on our waters. Aren\u2019t they unfair and absurd?\u201d said a fired-up Tolentino.
\nHe said it was the third time Bataan officials \u201chardly implemented\u201d the policy despite initial talks some two years ago.
\n\u201cSila pinababayaan natin and we\u2019ve lenient on their people encroaching on our coastal areas. But with what happened recently, I think there is this very important need to revisit agreements and policies like those advocated by PEMCI and other coastal line management agencies,\u201d he told Sun.Star.
\nTolentino said the upcoming public hearing this week with concerned agencies like the environment department and fisheries bureau will give relief to the Kapampangan fishermen on their plight.
