OLONGAPO City: The Olongapo City government together with the City Agriculture Office (CAO) installed an artificial reef in the deep sea of Brgy. Barretto, Olongapo, as part of its marine conservation program.
\nDesigned by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the artificial reef aims to provide permanent shelter and breeding area for aquatic organism and other marine life.
\n\u201cPrior to the construction, the BFAR had surveyed the area and determined the appropriate location where the reef will be built,\u201d said city Supervising Agriculturis Jhobal Sebarrotin.
\n\u201cThe artificial reef is constructed to promote marine protection, fisheries enhancement, and reef rehabilitation. But aside from marine conservation, the reef can also serve as an eco-tourism site where underwater weddings and recreational diving can be held,\u201d Sebarrotin added.
\nBuilt entirely of cement, steel bar, white sand, gravel, and tie wire, the man-made reef resembles a 5-layer pyramid around 250 centimeter high.
\nRepresentatives from BFAR, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Barangay Banicain, Kalaklan, Barretto, Arescom and OCPO Director Christopher Tambungan help in the installation of the artificial coral reef.
